  1. Yes Cliff Ton ,I thought the same thing when I saw the Skellington name . It's been mentioned elsewhere I.e. the barbers in Gedling. Actually there was also a Wilkins name within that Carlton Rd address and one of the Wilkins names had been amended to read Skellington . Whether those names will mean anything to Vic I don't know .
  2. That's a fairly unusual surname, but there was a Skellington family in Gedling/Carlton who've been mentioned quite a lot here. https://nottstalgia.com/forums/search/?q=skellington
  3. Vic you seem to indicate that the Kenneth W Clarke in the court case mentioned above is yours . There was another report of the same case that said Kenneth was aged 26 ( in 1944) . This computes to him being born in 1918 . Moving forward to the wartime 1939 Register there was a Kenneth W Clarke , a grocery manager living on Carlton Road with a Skellington family . This register doesn't give any relationships between residents within a property and he may have just been a lodger there ? (His occupation does match the later court case.) Fortunately the Re
  4. The Skellington family have a a new chandelier kindly donated by their friends.
  5. I see that Carlton Library is hosting an event to celebrate its 110th anniversary on Mon 25th January. I have memories of visiting the library from my childhood up until I left Nottm, and also while doing some research in the last few years. I am sure lots of Nottstalgians from the surrounding areas would have used this library and some of those still living in the area still do. One of the people involved is Roy Skellington, who was the Barber on Main Rd Gedling for as far back as I remember. The man who kept my brothers and my friend sueB's brothers hair tidy. The shop being opposite Hard
  6. Interesting posts on here from a while ago! I too went to the record shop mid 1960s. records were 6s and 8d each. Three for a pound if you were feeling rich! Skellington's barbers my brother always called Skeletons, I really thought this was his name. I remember Lillians wool shop too. Happy days!
  7. #57 Hello Conway V nice to here from another Gedlingite. I too was born and grew up in Gedling, on the same side of the road opposite Skellington the Barbers or Skello's as we called it. Although I would have only been nine in 1957 I had a few older Brothers and Sisters ( nine to be exact ) so you may have known one or two. As for the arches on Ranmoor Road I think they were new structures in a garden, as children we called them the church arches.
  8. Spellings and...speech, have heard: cliff Richards,Scotlish,skellington,Chesst....
  9. What a pleasant surprise I got today. The phone rang this morning and who should it be but ; Roy Skellington. He had phoned to let me know there had now been some more books recently printed and he had reserved one for SueB and myself as we ordered them whilst at the Library. Great Stuff, I am looking forward to reading his account. Hoping there will be some photo's of The Gedling from my childhood in it, and also trying to guess who the characters might be?
  10. We thoroughly enjoyed the talk at the Library; it was just as I had hoped. The talk covered part of the Carlton area from the top of the hill down towards Parks Corner, Schools, Churches, 2 Cinema's, and also long lost public houses. Many more points of interest. Mar Hill Road which had an extra interest to Mick2me, who once lived there and also for me as I had ancestors living there untill around 1911. The brewery on Mar Hill by Watson Fothergill was also pointed out for us, with his distinctive style. Lots of Photo's, many we have already seen, thanks to CliffTon on Nottstalgia. A pleasu
  11. I don't know if Skellingtons had more than one Barbers shop. I only know of the one on Main Road Gedling, simply because I grew up on Hardys Drive, directly opposite the shop, and our brothers and father would have their hair cut by either Mr Skellington Senior or Roy. We lived opposite the shop for the first ten years of my life. As for another shop run by the family down from the British Legion, I have no idea. #13, Mick has mentioned a shop in the same area, so perhaps they did have another property. Sorry I can't be more helpful.
  12. I seem to remember the name Skellington from my days living at Carlton. Was his shop on the left, just before the crossing when going in to Netherfield?
  13. I would be surprised (nicely) if Mr Skellington Senior is still alive because Roy is 87 now,he started cutting hair while still at school aged 14 and went intothe family business, I imagine after leaving school. LL, if you want to read up a bit about Roy there is a Link on #2 with details about Roy. Very interesting, it bought a tear to my eyes when I saw a picture of him after all these years.
  14. Mr. Skellington must be getting very old now. My father in law used to get his hair cut there back in the 60s. Maybe Roy is his son? Edited to add. Thanks for the link, Carni. Nice to see the inside of Gedling church in the background too.
  15. That sounds like a good plan sueB. I would love to see Mr Skellington again. Perhaps get the chance to see if he remembers our families or at least us playing out opposite his shop in the 1950s. I am very interested in the book, I hope there are some for sale on the day. I have just phoned the Willowbrook in Gedling and they serve lunches, no need to book, so if any Nottstalgians want to join in and visit the Library or at least a mini meet up in the Willowbrook, Main Road Gedling at about 1pm. That would be great?
  16. I'm going to try and pop in there on Monday carni it would be nice to see Roy Skellington again. I should say 'Mr Skellington' we were never aloud to call an adult by their first name when we were children. I wonder if he would remember our family names carni.
  17. Just a little more to add to the post above. There can't be many men of our age from Gedling that didn't have their hair cut by Mr Skellington in the 1950s.Just seeing his face again took me back all those years ago. I was once asked by SueB's brothers to go to Mr Skellington and ask if he sold "Sky Hooks". I remember his smile as he said "Very sorry but he didn't" http://www.nottinghampost.com/Life-gentleman-hairdresser-Gedling-immortalised/story-28233068-detail/story.html
  18. Carni, Do you remember your LOCAL Milkman, Mr. Leach, next to the school, & Beryl his delivery girl, she was a brilliant footballer. While we are doing do you remember, how about Roy Skellington the barber & Sunday School Teacher, he in still working delivering the church mag at 91years, slowed up a bit now though.
