It's not new, Mick, it's been a restaurant/health club for probably twenty-odd years now. Lakeside is a mile up the road from me, just above the Lea Pool roundabout on the A60 to Mansfield.

It's former life was as Bestwood Pumping Station which pumped water from north Notts up to the reservoir over Arch Bridge at Redhill I believe. This serves/served the locality of Arnold I understand. It's often incorrectly identified as Papplewick Pumping Station which is actually a few miles to the north-eat of it in the parish of the same name.

It's decent, and it's a nice building but the food is overpriced for what it is. I occasionally go up there for a pint and there never seem to be that many people there unless it's a wedding or other function.

Very nice decking outside by the pond which has lots of large carp in it. Surprisingly muted traffic noise from the buy road outside. There's an island in the pond which they dress up at Christmas.

It's a really nice set-up but there just seems to be something missing (apart from people). It's just too expensive for one thing.

Haven't tried the Gap Inn at Muston.

Don't feel particularly well-served for carvery-type places on this side of the city in general. In general I find a lot of pub food increasingly mediocre though I do have a few favourites.

A couple of personal recommendations from me would be The Woodlark at Lambley which is absolutely excellent and the recently mentioned Admiral Rodney at Calverton which has an interesting and varied menu, well done and health portions.

Maybe we should have a thread for contributor's eating out recommendations?

Remember the folks going to the Wheatsheaf Inn in Burton Joyce every now and then back in the early days. Looking at Google, it still seems the same but now heavily built up for miles around it. Remember driving back through countryside when I was a young'un.

Talking of curry, off out to the Noor Jahan on Mansfield Road this week.

Although it's one of those Nottingham restaurants that appears to have been there forever, I ate in there for just the first time a few weeks ago. Have to say, and I'm no expert on curry, that I thought it was very good value and nice food. The set meal is a winner at just £10.95. Starter & main dish/vegetable side dish or naan/pilau rice and coffee to wash it down

Very friendly restaurant too.
