As a 16 year old I had a bsa 650. I managed to seize it up due to stupidity, lack of knowledge and oil and I swapped it for a Norton es2 and 30 quid (my way) from one of the designers at Raleigh. At o

Re the premises on Ilkeston Road, Did it later become a dealer in second hand American cars?

The place that sold American cars was a little further down the road, I think it was Anglo american cars, they now provide filming vehicles for tv and films.

Hmmm.. Right here goes, As I came from Gedling and owned bikes from the mid 70s onwards, There were a number of shops I remember... Dawsons in Netherfield, Rex Robbo on Carlton Hill ( for my Puch Grand Prix ), a few doors up from that for a time was 'Crosslands' who later moved down to the shops facing Carlton precinct, Lowater St motors of course, many hours spent searching the yard for that ilusive spare part. the owner Dennis Rogers used to have a three wheel Morgan car, going down into town was TMS and Clarkes the Honda dealer.

Roy Wharton had a shop on Radford Road ( I knew his son John ) and he specialised in Scooters, not really motorbikes. further up Radford Road was Joselyns ( Suzuki Dealer ) with went on to be Granby Motors.

There was a little seconhand bike shop on the small street near the main Post office on Huntingdon St... I remember them having a 'Malaguti Monte' 50cc moped in there... I could'nt afford it at the time.

The big Yamaha/Honda place at Daybrook Square was always a good place to browse, as was Colin Gregory's ( Suzuki )at Thackerays Lane, and later upstairs at the big garage at daybrook ( now Kwik Fit).

Ahhhh... those were the days....

I rembember Bunneys on Wilford Lane and E Kingston just around the corner

The Monte would have been mine!(think it was MAU 175P) I part exchanged it for a Yamaha YDS7 250cc that turned out to be a larger pile of poo than the Monte.

The shop was called HandY motorcycles and it was on Rick Street (the HandY was the initials of the owners and looked like handy) The YDS7 lasted

48 hours before giving up the ghost and they refused to fix it! I was a spotty 17 year old and they told me to feck off! My older brother drove a tipper truck for Watts Demolition

and had a reputation for being a nutter, he took me down to the shop and offered to reverse his truck through the shop window the guy in the shop called his bluff but bottled in when

the truck was an inch away from taking the shop down! Oddly I did go back and got a really nice Suzuki 250cc Hustler with a racing tank, seat and clipons for £175:00

Great story that - a mate of mine had a YDS7 for about 2 years, thrashed it all over and never had any problems at all.

Don't think anybody's mentioned Wheelcraft on Radford Road Hyson Green yet, I bought a 250G5 and RD200 from them.

Anyone else remember Bob's Spares? They were on the corner of Northumberland Street and Alfred Street Central. Full of all sorts of reclaimed bits ad the occassional full bike.

Yes i do, as the old saying goes Bob was my uncle. His name was Leslie Robert Goodman, he and his son (my cousin) Brian Robert Goodman ran the shop and i also worked for them in the sixties. The shop was an old Co op that still had the old smoke room for smoking meats and fish there was an upstairs where all the engines and gearboxes were kept and then below ground where the frames, wheels, mud guards and tanks were kept. The two workshops were on the ground floor with the entrance on Northumberland street. The shop where the bikes for sale were kept had its entrance on Alfred Street The workshop was well equipped with reboring machines crankshaft grinder camshaft grinder and valve grinder as well as a hydraulic press for fitting big ends.. We used to do engine work for all the other shops around Nottingham. They gave up with motor bikes and did engine reconditioning full time and then move from Alfred Street to a unit in Colwick.

Anyone remember Rayner and Wilson at the bottom of Woodborough rd, bought my Dresda Triton from them, god I wish that I still had it. It had a fibre glass tank on it when I bought it with Triton written on it but the BIN MEN knocked it off its side stand and onto a telegraph pole so that put payed to that tank. Bought an alloy tank from Briely Smith (not certain of the spelling) think they were down the Meadows.

My brother was always down at Raynor and Wilson shop, I remember Stan Raynor too, but can't remember whether he was just a mate of my brothers or how else I would know him, apart from the bike shop.

I remember a very small motorbike on the left, not far up Woodborough Rd. That must have been Rayner and Wilsons. I used to walk home past it, there was a Velocette Venom Thruxton in the window, Brand new and a big ticket price. I was told it was the last one ever available for sale anywhere. Late 1968 I think. I ended up buying an ex race DBD34 Goldie from a guy in Radford.
