I like Christmas time, but we don't go overboard on decorations, presents or extra food.  I like it because of the carols by candlelight and the Nativity play at church, also the excitement of our you

Boxing Day lunch always has been Bubble and Squeak day for us, usually served around twoish for a few family regulars who join us every year. B@S, all cold meat and stuffing, fried egg and baked beans

Christmas was always dreaded in my family because there was inevitably some disaster. Usually, it was the death of a family member or friend and a sense of apprehension built up as the festive season

After nearly 50 years of kids and Grandkids, feel ive done my bit.............so try to get away as far as I can........Cambridge last year......but much further this year hopefully..........

Went into Marks and Spencers on my way home from work at B&Q this evening. Went to buy myself a bottle of their lovely cloudy lemonade, couldn't find it, why, because their shelves had been stocked up with Christmas stuff! It's September for Christ's sake, last week we were experiencing temperatures of 34C down here in Essex, has the world gone mad, no, just exploitation by the corporates. I gather B&Q will be receiving their Xmas stuff in a couple of weeks, that'll be nice!!

Not sure what 'The System' is Mary? :)

I thought that if anything this thread shows how varied people's attitudes and approaches are.

I imagine most of us have similar memories from way back.  I certainly do and very fond ones too, but of course times move on.  Back in the day most 'ordinary' families lived life very much the same.  Even when I was a kid in the 50's and 60s, we usually spent Christmas Day at home, Boxing Day at one set of Grandparents, and maybe New Years Day at the others.  Then over time it got so that they were invited to our house as they got older. Etc. Then of course started getting invited to girlfriend's houses and vice versa.

When Mrs Col and I first married we alternated between respective parents for Christmas Day until we had our own kids, when we started doing our own Christmas and inviting our parents to us.

Last year my oldest announced that she was 'doing' Christmas at home with her family for the first time.  Youngest still came to us along with her boyfriend.

We all got together on Boxing Day.

Of course this year they'll be going to the 'Outlaws' in Ipswich where my Son in Law comes from.

It's not easy getting everyone together.

I hate christmas, not the real reason for christmas of course but the over commercialisation & falseness surrounding the evet itself.

I don't do pressies except to grandson & when he is eighteen he will be on his own two feet !

After church the telephone gets unplugged, the doors get locked & the curtains drawn with the heating turned up & sit & enjoy a few films. Some of the oldies esp Miracle on 34th Street & Scrooge with George C Scott starring.

Also like hippogirl, no turkey, Mrs C is veggie & I don't like turkey much either.

Nowadays I am allowed one bar of chocolate per year..............................at christmas ! Some things are worth waiting for !

I have nothing against people enjoying Christmas, though I hate the commercialisation. What does get right up my nose is the BBC TV schedules. It seems to think that all people want to do from getting up in a morning to going back to bed at night is watch television, and what tripe most of it is. Most annoying is moving regular features and programme to make way for what it considers are what we want to watch. Well I want to switch on the TV at 6 o'clock and see the News at its usual time.

What I mostly look for on the Christmas TV schedules are films i've not seen.  I usually record them to the Humax box for watching at leisure. (Idon't have Sattelite TV)  Otherwise, I agree with Chulla.  News doesn't stop happening because it's Christmas and that at least should be left alone.

Christmas stock has started appearing in our local shops. Last week two of them had displays up and more will surely follow in the next few days. After all; there are only 89 days 13hrs and 56 minutes left 'til Xmas!

Oh and I forgot but Catfan reminded me .

9      No mention of the benefit scroungers too lazy to turn out at Xmas to speak to their  subjects

Pre record a Xmas message, get p....d at Mahiki on Xmas eve, be chauffeured to one of the many houses on Xmas morning in time for an unchristian photo shoot at church ....and a spread in OK magazine ......no class

This Christmas will be the first one without my parents but on the positive side, I get two Christmases.

My mrs is Russian and their Christmas is 7 January. If I time it right I may get to Russia for New Year and celebrate Christmas on 7 January. Vodka will be involved, especially if my mrs cousin Andrei is there. ( I took Andrei a bottle of single malt a couple of years back and he put cola in it. I have never forgiven him)

I started this thread 4 years ago, gosh where did I lose those 4 years !

Anyway here in Oz it's all started again, all the stores are filling their shelves with crap, probably most made in China !

Wifey is maxing her credit card again for our wonderful, but, we've got the lot anyway, grand kids.

But the good news is we will be static, not far from our family this year for the first time in 5 years, so will have a family day BBQ, here on the 25 acre property we are looking after for a while.

That will mean about 18 of us, including the grandkids, but having said all above I do love and adore them all.

So all is not doom and gloom, but did I say, I still hate bloody Christmas :rolleyes:

A couple of bottles of good red and I'll be oblivious to it all anyway, good anesthetic when you don't normally imbibe more than 2 glasses, but the head ache afterwards, Oh dear !

It's not that I hate Christmas,I don't think I know how to enjoy it,Christmas was nothing special to me as a kid, just another way of threatening me (get no presents) if I did'nt behave, not that I was a bad kid, would'nt dare,it seems today it's not so much about giving as "lets get onto debt so we can give more than the other folks give their kids", and some kids today are so ungrateful because they are "getting" all year round, for me Christmas is a sad time of year with all the crap childhood memories coming back, anyway don't take any notice of me if you want a nice Christmas I wish you all well
