Is it Just Me, or Does Anyone Else Hate Christmas !

Recommended Posts

For me as I grow older, I am coming to hate christmas ! Dont get me wrong, I still think christmas is for kids, grandkids and families but,

We're not really religious people , (I have my personal beliefs) but cannot stand all the hoo hah for what is really a 3 day holiday break for most. (sorry if I offend any religious fanatics out there)

My missus is terrible, and goes crazy trying to buy every man and his dog a card and pressie, and probably takes her 6 months to recover from it financially.Half of which is not appreciated, not wanted or just ignored.

Kids to day seem to have every gizmo in the book and finding a suitable gift for arrogant little 9 year olds, with everything already, is a nightmare !

She goes mad buying hams, legs of roast beef, kilo's of prawns etc. we eat like pigs, regret it afterwards, make new resolutions to not do it next year, spend 3 months trying to lose the extra kilo's, only to do it all again !

Maybe i'm just turning into mr Scrooge ! Humbug !

Roll on the day after boxing day and I've got another 360 odd days before I have to go through it all again.

I like Christmas time, but we don't go overboard on decorations, presents or extra food.  I like it because of the carols by candlelight and the Nativity play at church, also the excitement of our you

Boxing Day lunch always has been Bubble and Squeak day for us, usually served around twoish for a few family regulars who join us every year. B@S, all cold meat and stuffing, fried egg and baked beans

Christmas was always dreaded in my family because there was inevitably some disaster. Usually, it was the death of a family member or friend and a sense of apprehension built up as the festive season

Nope you're not the only Ebenezer out there.

Mind you saying that , I went through a period of not really liking it in my early to mid 20's

I even went fishing on Christmas day once, just to get out the house and away from any arguments. Bread and Cheese for Christmas dinner !!

I used to go sailboarding in the uk a lot, and remember one christmas morning after the kids had opened their pressie's My lovely other half had a bit of a moan at me, so I got me gear out the garage, stuck it in me combi van and headed down to Colwick ponds for a bit of sailing.

Only problem it was freezing the night before and the west lake was frozen all around the edges.

Plan B, fire up the gas heater and the kettle, in the back of my campervan, sat and enjoyed my cuppa and potnoodle in peace ! Lol.

Did go back after lunch and all was forgiven !

Christmas would be alright and bearable if it was for two days but it seems to start at the end of August.

I enjoy Christmas day & Boxing day(may be) but after that I want to get back to a "normal" life.

There are things I like about it and things not so much. I have found it a bit of a pressure over the years, doing the right thing by people, finding suitable gifts et al.

I don't enjoy the way it begins so early each year and I find this spoils the event for me a little

I still think it's fantastic for kids but above all the message will always be most important for me and that is what Christmas means to me.

Christmas used to be my annual holiday when I worked "down under" three week shut down, plus I'd always try to get an extra weeks leave booked in as soon as I returned to work, so usually got a month off over Christmas and New Year. The wife and I used to "hit the road" and do a few hundred miles touring.

I did cover one year as I was a leading hand electrician, perks were most had job and knock, so when our engineer gave us the nod, we'd be on our way home too.

I still love Christmas, just me and the missus, we spend it here, it's really only one of two days I do kick back and be lazy.

Im not a fan of Christmas. The build up is expensive then when the day comes, all we do is the same as any other sunday. I havent sent cards for a few years now and those i receive tend to get put in a pile rather than on the shelf. Having said that, I do think a lot has to do with who you are with at the time. My new partner loves Christmas and calls me a Bah humbug. We have got a few family parties to go to this year (his family) and I have to admit to actually looking forward to it a little bit - in fact I've actually bought some cards this year and even got a tree up. Went to Birmingham German market today too and that was really good. Must be goin soft!

Makes me laugh that everybody here puts up their Christmas decorations at the end of November, but takes them down on Boxing Day - I always thought Christmas was 12 days long and STARTED on Christmas Day!

I love christmas, i refuse to spend a fortune on decorations or pressents though, but i will buy everyone in the family a few gifts, most of my decorations came from the poundshop or in the sales at tesco home or B&Q after christmas, either that or my mums thrown a few bags of em my way. Christmas is about family, and i love spending time with mine. Some christmas films on tv, dinner, a few games on the wii or something and not forgetting the easteneders crimbo special!!

This year im cooking dinner for just the three of us, its the fist time id of had christmas dinner without the rest of my family but were having a big dinner together crimbo eve, and at the partners house on boxing day, but we'll all get together christmas day night for a buffet tea (including the left over cold meats, yumm!)

this time of year i also like to give abit to charity, because it breaks my heart to think of all the people who dont get to enjoy christmas like us who are lucky enough to. And i bake mince pies for the neighbors, christmas is a time for giving!

Christmas in our town, started early November. The whole town decorated with lights, because we have The Polar Express here from first week in November to first week in January, so they want the riders to feel like it's Christmas. I was skeptical to start with, that it all started so early, but I have to admit, every business goes all out and it does look magical. The tree was lit just after thanksgiving, it's a big event to bring the tree into town, the GCRy go out and pick the tree and the forest service cut it. It's brought to town on a flat bed truck, they stop traffic, and it gets a police escort. Then the stick it in a hole in the road on a side street, and the railway decorate it ready for the lighting ceremony.

As a "religious fanatic" :) I do not think the problem is Christmas, as such. Us religious fanatics get just as sick and tired of the hype and idiocy that seems to start earlier each year as anyone else. We need to be able to separate the religious and the secular celebration of this midwinter madness.

Well this year going to my daughters for xmas dinner (as usual) then sod the lot, we're staying at home for the rest of the holiday. I will have 8 days holiday & fully intend to rest & recharge batteries, instead of visiting & having visitors here.

As far as pressies go, only my grandson gets a pressie, no one else, sod em all. Instead me & Mrs Catfan make a few charitable donations to our favourite charities. We've been doing this for a few yers now.

I do not know about anyone else but one member of Nottstalgia shines through on this topic and many others like a breath of fresh air.

I am referring to Pixie.

Her apparent young innocence, coupled with a maturity, outlook and caring is so heartwarming and you just know that her young family will not only enjoy their first Christmas together but hopefully, many more.

Your parents should be right proud of you, young lady.

I'm with you on what you say Dave,if not for the birth of Jesus Christ, would there be anything to replace the celebration?.

We could replace it with the Winter Solstice, which was the celebration the christians usurped.

A good Yule to all of you.

I see Christmas was originally called Christ Mass and was a pagan holiday of 12 days of debauchery conprising of open sexual practicing in the streets, drunkenness and basically being pigs...Not much has really changed except open sex on the streets would get you arrested these days.

Started off following the Roman feast of 12 days of "anything goes" in honour of two of their Gods and was spread throughout the Roman Empire by it's Legions.

Frowned on by the RC Church, it was absorbed, a case of if you can't beat them join them...LOL

Banned by Olie Cromwell and restored by King Charles 2nd.

It was also banned for many years in the American Colonies and into the USA era.

Ironic Christ was born months before Christmas!! It's known the dates of the Roman tax collecting period and census, and it wasn't December either, even taking into account the change in calendars since then.

Well that gives ammunition for the Bahhh Humbug crowd.

Anyway, Merry Christmas and a Happy New year, and don't get too cold dancing around the pine trees naked on Winter Solstice night...Fri 21st Dec......

Have you ever noticed that Christian festivals typically align with Jewish ones? Coincidence - I think not!
