Thomas 11
Is it Carlton St ( Goose Gate).
Beefsteak 305
The pub on the left appears to be called "The Gate Inn" suggesting that it is on an old entrance to the city. I'm sure there's a site where old Nottingham pubs is listed. If we can find that it may help.
Beefsteak 305
I'm also pretty sure it ain't the 70's either, early 60's maybe?
Beefsteak 305
Found the list, can't find the pub ...... Wouldn't have been a problem if it were still there............LOL http://www.closedpubs.co.uk/nottinghamshire/nottingham.html

Beefsteak 305
The pub is a Home Ales pub (I know that doesn't mean owt !) Maybe that's where a mistake has been made.

mick2me 3,033
In your first picture I can see the sign 'Pepper Street'
.... 23
Bridlesmith Gate and Pepper Street. http://www.nottshistory.org.uk/articles/tts/tts1929/itinerary1929p2.htm
littlebro 234
The first image shows Pepper Street closed off. This is probably due to the building of the extension to M&S and/or the building of NEM House (National Employers Mutual General Insurance Association) at the top of Pepper Street. mick2me 3,033
Thanks Stu I see exactly where it is now. The remains of Pepper Street (A Nicholson, 2004). So the Home Ales pub in the original photo... 'The Fountain'?

.... 23
Interesting. Pepper Street area, the original home of printing in Nottingham: 'Half way between Pepper Street and St. Peter's Gate, Aiscough in 1708 set up the first printing press in Nottingham and he prospered so that, as we have already seen, he had to transfer his business to Barker Gate to more commodious premises.' Beefsteak 305
Possibly rebuilt as such , as I'm pretty sure The Fountain was quite a 'new build'
.... 23
'The existing Post Office was on Bridlesmith Gate, roughly where the The Fountain Inn now stands.' http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=h2K7AAAAIAAJ&pg=PA15&lpg=PA15&dq=the+fountain+inn+bridlesmith+gate+history&source=bl&ots=gFfc_JB2W_&sig=Pd7HRaM8GAB7UoA8hYxJfFvAaKw&hl=en&sa=X&ei=U7YDUZydKsbE0QXKsICYDA&ved=0CE8Q6AEwBQ#v=onepage&q=the%20fountain%20inn%20bridlesmith%20gate%20history&f=false
