Stafford & Co Ltd, Netherfield & London Printers

Recommended Posts

Hi

I lived in Carlton until the the early 1980's and then had to move to the south coast with my job

I have recently bought an old movie poster and it says in the margin Printed by Stafford Printers, Nottingham & London

I have tried searching the net and information is a bit thin on the ground but after a little digging I found a reference to Stafford & Co Limited, lithographic printers for the cinema and the railways.

It says they started in Bingham and moved to Netherfield

I don't remember them, does anyone have any details about the company? Are they still around?

Any help with the history would be much appreciated

Almost certain now that we will be having an exhibition of my father's posters that he created at Stafford's in the 1930's at the Bonington Gallery at Nottingham Trent University in the next 6 months

Hi Connoisseur and All My father was a lithographic artist at Stafford's in the 1930's. He started as an apprentice there in 1923 aged 14, and was immediately sent to the Nottingham Municipal School

Great news! At last there is to be an exhibition in Nottingham of my Dad's posters next spring. It will be at the Bonington Gallery, Nottingham Trent University, at the Shakespeare St. campus. You mig

I'm not 100% sure , but I think there was a lithiographic printers just over the railway bridge towards Colwick. I'm pretty sure I used to pass one on my way to one of my old favourite fishing spots.

re - what babs said.........off Forester Street there is a cul-de-sac of modern houses called Caxton Close. That used to be a printing factory - hence Caxton - although I don't know the name of the printers who were there.

(Stu will probably know...he's good at printers)

I don't know Staffords and they appear to pre-date my time in the print trade according to this. There appears to be a book about them though:

The name I remember form the Netho area at the time was Lonsdale and Bartholomew (Lonny's as they were known in the trade). I note that their address of Forester Street was adjacent to Caxton Close and that they also specialised in poster work, similar to Staffords, particularly transport posters. I wonder if they were connected in some way? Sorry I can't help further as I'm not familiar with the Netherfield area.

Me too. I entered the trade in 1975 as a compositor. Printing, in spite of many, many local businesses, was a small world in those days where everyone seemed to know everyone. I'm sure we would know a few mutual names.

My time at the printers (J.Howitt & Son Ltd) was spent in admin, first in costing, then accounts, then purchasing and finally on a special project that included inserting winning lottery tickets into envelopes going out to football clubs and supermarkets!

I left there and went to work at a fabric manufacturer, then a book market agency selling books to garden centres including a range from a publisher based in Calverton - Floraprint Ltd

Joined Huntley & Palmers selling biscuits to GNCS who were taken over by Nabisco in the mid 80s and end up moving to the south coast, now work for a major drinks company

Get back to Nottingham when I can, my Mum and Brother still live there!

Now I like researching things I buy...the movie poster I bought is "Thunderbirds are Go" made in the late 60s but I am not sure about the printer the seller said it was printed in the 70s which seems weird, would like to know what happend to Stafford & Company Limited

Received a reply to my enquiry to the Central Library in Nottingham which was passed to a nice lady called Dorothy, who game me the following:

Stafford and Company were, as you say, based in Netherfield from the 1880's and acquired by Lonsdale and Bartholomew in 1961, ceasing trading in the 1980's

There is a 70 page book about this company written by Peter Barrie Waite and published by him in 2012

A history of Stafford & Co Ltd. lithographic, pictorial, letterpress, General and Commercial Printers, Netherfield, near Nottingham. ISBN 0952461250

This book is illustrated with some examples of the printing done by this company and also has information about the Stafford family and the company

Which is the book I have ordered...so just have to wait and see when it arrives

A collection of film/theatre posters printed by Staffords was included in 'Antiques Roadshow' yesterday. Fast-forward to 37.56 on here http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p01f9ndq/Antiques_Roadshow_Series_36_Newstead_Abbey_2/

The programme was from Newstead Abbey and there were several other Nottingham-connected items.
