Commo 1,292
I suffered at Bramcote Hills Grammer between 1958 - 1963. I know that Trevor S was an honorary old boy having been consigned there whilst waiting for Arnold High tto open it's doors, and I believe I have read that Hippogirl was also an ex, although somewhat later than Trevor and me. Anyone else willing to own up to having had to trudge up and down Moor Lane?
hippo girl 1,995
Hi Commo. You are right....I was at BHGS in the sixties, Mr Lyons was the head teacher......Sussexred was there too

Trevor S 2,003
Trudge up and down Moor Lane...no, no, no. Roys Coaches from Mapperley Plains provided a school bus service literally door to door. Picked up and dropped off outside the Kennels at RoT during the BHGS year of 58 and then the same coach line continued the service to ACHS from 59 onwards. Even had the same woman, Hazel Luff, employed by Roys to look after us and keep us in line during the bus trips during all those years. Roys Coaches RoT school bus ran out to ACHS from the Harlequin west of RoT, through RoT, along the A52 and through West Bridgford with the last major pick up outside the County Hall on Loughborough Road before travelling down Arkwright Street, across town and out along Mapperly Plains and the long drop down Gedling Road hill. The return trip differed as we went via London Road and Radcliffe Road to RoT. We thought we were the bees knees on the homeward trips when, instead of the old double decker noisy rattler, we sometimes had a coach with plush fabric seats AND A RADIO! I cannot remember the route, after Trent Bridge, taken in 58 to BHGS. It must have been along Derby Road but definitely not along Castle Boulevard. Great times.
Commo 1,292
We were bussed in from Ruddington by Netherfield Luxury Coaches, usually an observation coach which was the only one I had seen apart from a Dinky toy which I had had for many years in my collection. The bouncer (escort) on the bus was an old lad, very tall and gaunt, happy to be known as Grandad, and who called us lads "serry" which ties in with another thread on here. The last pick up was top of Wilford Hill, then usual route along the Embankment, Wilford Road onto Castle Boulevard, Abbey St onto Uni Blvd then thro' Lenton Abbey to Derby Road. Journey times just gave enough time to finish homework in collusion with others! Prisoners transported on the bus were destined for both the Grammar and the Tech, probably about half and half. Staff at BHGS at the time Ben Lyons (Head), Fanny (Flange) Parsons (Deputy Inquisitor), Pete Cox and Farmer Giles (Art), Jack Pilgrim (Music), Mrs Walker (English)< later to wed Graham Bull (Maths) tho' we never could understand why! Bubbles Curzon(Sadism and French), Doc Murphy and Mr Thornton (History), Don Ager and Mr Cunnington - guess what he was called - (Geog), mr Lythe (Physics) etc.... School days are the happiest days of your life - NOT!!
hippo girl 1,995
Bubbles Curzon was my first form tutor in the tower block, although I was a rebel at school, I managed to be a county athlete, and go on to university, so things couldn't have been that bad, Latin and all !!!!!!! Commo 1,292
Hippo girl,I was always told that not everyone existed in a state of despair, but as I was in the G2 stream, it was unlikely that we would meet those in the Arts stream who had the pleasure of Latin with, probably, Caligula Davies! As an athlete, would you have known Miss Wade as the games mistress, or had she gone by your time? Although BHGS was a definite improvement on Dotheboys Hall in Ruddington, it was still to me like open prison but with cross country.
Commo 1,292
ERRATUM #5 - Should have read Doc Riley, not Murphy, but I remembered it was something Irish.
hippo girl 1,995
Didn't know miss wade, think it was price , the games mistress.......Davis the Latin master scared the s..t out of me but not as bad as Gaby Hayes, the chemistry master or miss Parsons !!!!!!!! Trevor S 2,003
Commo.....Do you remember Doug Downes who would have travelled in with you from Ruddington 58-59 before he went on to ACHS? He lived at Packman Drive. Another traveller with you would have been Tony Sheargold.
Commo 1,292
Trevor, I was good friends with Douggie Downs at Junior school and cannot remember him being at BHGS whilst waiting for the paint to dry at ACHS, I wonder if he was in another "waiting area" with Tony, who I knew also, not as a friend like Doug, but as a fellow inmate at Ruddington Endowed Boys junior school. I lost touch with Doug as is the case when you are sent off around the County by the powers that be, and think that the family did move away from Ruddington. I re-acquainted with Tony after leaving school, when you met up again with junior school ex cons whilst standing on the corner outside the chip shop with everyone else. I recall that Dougs father worked for Windsor Soaps (in Colwick?) as a sales manager, and was one of the few folk at the time with a smart motor parked utside the house! I did like to think that as I am now nearing, if not already in, my dotage, my memory of those past times is pretty good, but you have thrown this into disarray having lost memory of Doug's school journeys!! Trevor S 2,003
Commo, I was scrolling through the PTP archives and found the below picture of the Canal that we have spoken about on the cross country runs at BHGS. We would have been running along the towpath on the left and towards the camera - the only thing missing is the ice and snow! http://www.pictureth...006950&prevUrl=
sussexred 25
Hi Commo. You are right....I was at BHGS in the sixties, Mr Lyons was the head teacher......Sussexred was there too I was indeed! 1966-1973.
Commo 1,292
Although I hated my interment at school, the passage of time tends to dull the emotion of fear and loathing, and I was quite sorry to hear of the demolition of the school a few years back as it is still a part of my adolescent memory. Commo 1,292
Hippogirl and Sussexred, question for you. As you were at Bramcote after my time of incarceration there, did the School ever have an annual Speech Day? Being there from 1958 until 1963, I cannot recall ever attending one although that may have been because I lived a good distance fro school and could not, nor was expected, to try to travel there in an evening. Question arose because I visited my elder brother yesterday and he mentioned the big deal made of speech day at Mundella, this taking place in an evening at the Albert Hall with lots of rehearsals taking place prior to the event. hippo girl 1,995
Hi Commo, Yes there was an annual speech / prize day where the winners would receive their book voucher.....the Beeston gazette and evening post would publish a photo of the event, and somewhere I have copies . Commo 1,292
My Brother was at Mundella 1951 to 1956, anyone else admit to being that age who was there then and remembered Speech day at The Albert Hall?
Commo 1,292
Hippo Girl, thanks for that info, wonder why I can't remember ? Were they held in the evening and we were given dispensation not to attend if we lived over a certain distance from school ? Perhaps my mind has blanked out such horrors, certainly know I never won a prize !!
hippo girl 1,995
Commo, They were always held in the evening , for the pupils who received a prize and their parents....never received an academic prize, always the PE one, but did get one for being head of LEVRIC house and when I left sixth form, was invited back to speech day because I had gone onto further education !!!!!!! Commo 1,292
Hippo Girl, many thanks for the info, now know why I knew nothing about it, but good on you !!
Stan 386
My Brother was at Mundella 1951 to 1956, anyone else admit to being that age who was there then and remembered Speech day at The Albert Hall? I was there the same years. What was his name? Send a message if you do not want to make it public. Speech day was a very big deal. Rehearsing began in Aug/Sept and seemed to go on for months with the (in)famous Barton Hart. Every member of the school had to sing (or mime)
Commo 1,292
Stan, was going to PM you but the system is blocking me from so doing, so I hope that this post can be seen. My Brother is David Palmer, and he still regularly sees both Mick Selby and Vere White, and I think occasionally Derek Turner. His bogeyman at Mundella, like most of you there I reckon, was Frank Ordoyno, a person with a lasting infamy even after all this time, unless of course you may have found him to be a pussy cat !?! Stan 386
Thanks for that. Now this will be quite important to me.Derek Turner (if it is the same one) ,is someone I have been trying to locate for years. I would be over the moon to contact him again,. I hear from Vere White, and Mick Selby attends the yearly reunions in Nottingham. Your brother David I knew only by sight. I will be seeing a few of the regulars in Nottingham in August, and another group of regulars in London. Frank was the ultimate `thug' ,there were many others in those days.
