Clifton Miners Welfare Institute had to change it's name to Clifton Miners Social Club when it lost the sponsorship of the Coal Board.

It's now classed as a charity and has to do things for the community. My eldest son went there for a football presentation.

When I was a kid (which I suppose isn't that long ago) my dad used to meet my grandad for a pint, but my brother and I were NOT allowed inside - we had to sit at the outdoor tables or play in a play area. If we wanted to speak to them, we had to stand in the doorway to the bar area and try to get their attention.

I was told it was the law, but I suspect my dad knew we wouldn't question it!

I still have my old membership card from the last year of the pit, everyone locally called it the "Stute".

No screaming kids cos they are back at school BUT nigh on impossible to get to the bar with bleddy pushchairs parked anywhere GRRRRRRRRRR.
