Coningswath Road houses history

Recommended Posts

Hi

Always wondered what the history is of the council houses on Coningswath rd in Carlton. Does anyone know? We're they built for miners? What era were they built? Does anyone know of an Irene Johnson who would have lived in one of the houses in 1950? (We have her name written on our outside wall in pen I think?) Does anyone have any photos of her in the property (long shot I know). Would love to know some history.

Thanks

Not being from around there I do not know much about the area except that they could not be miner's houses as they were probably too far from Gedling pit. There was a lot about Carlton in two or three consecutive copies of the Nottingham Post Bygones but it was a few years ago. Maybe the Post has an archive of these things. Try writing to Andrew Smart at the Post.

Hi Sally and welcome .

Just had a quick look on the news archives and the earliest mention of the road in the Evening Post or Guardian seems to be 1940.

I'm sure the map guys will be able to pin it down closer . I don't think the estate was just for miners .

There is this about the meaning of the name :

SKETCHES OF OLD NOTTINGHAM.name of " Coningswath " (i.e. King's ford), occurring in old times, where it crossed the river Meden. That this is the north road mentioned in the Doomsday survey of Nottingham there cannot be a doubt,

Nottinghamshire Guardian East Midlands, England 07/02/1879

Sorry to be pedantic, and as an aid to any body trying to help out, the road is actually Coningsworth Road.

I went to school on there everyday for 5 years !

I would imagine they were built pre war in the 30s

Aahh Coningsworth (not wath) makes a difference , there is an Evening Post mention in the family announcements section from 1936 .

I always knew it as Coningswath, and Google seems to concur.

Sorry I only lived near there for nearly 40 years, I didn't realise I was mistaken for such a long time ! I've done some checking and it is called Coningswath road now!! It most certainly was Coningsworth in our Schooldays (It was the schools address after all)

This is worth reproducing from rootsweb :

Subject: Re: [NTT] Twitchel - and Conningsworth Road Date: Tue, 9 Jan 2001

I know this is a bit of a diversion from the subject, but your e-mail brought back a lot of memories.I lived on Portland Road, off Conningsworth Road , from about 1960.

My grandparents lived on the junction of Valley Road and Foxhill Road, and I used to visit them often, crossing the fields you describe.

My memory is that the field which is now the golf range was called'Russia'; this was divided by hedging from the next large field, called'Shepherd's field' .

This in turn was divided by a track from the next field, which was called 'David's field'. David's field went right up to Fraser Square.

I suppose Carlton Forum occupies all of this land now.We always used to call the track between David's and Shepherd's fields 'The Alps'. It ran from Coningsworth Road to Valley Road, close to the junction with Foxhill Road.

There was another path, paralell with The Alps, but this time leading from Cavendish Road .

We knew this as the twitchell. It ran from opposite J&ATaylor's shop, to Foxhill Road. There was another twitchell close by too.

This one ran from Portland Road,to the top of Cavendish Road, by the junction with Westdale Lane.

It was walled ,quite long, and badly lit - very frightening in the dark!

I think I picked up all of these names from my mother and her family, who had always lived in the area - but like John, I have no idea of their origin.RegardsJane Gallagher

I used to use those twitchells a lot when I was tasked with walking our dog as a lad.

Looking at the old maps web site, houses started to appear on Coningswath in the 1930s, which would probably have followed-on from the development of the Porchester estate earlier in the decade.

I must have been up and down that road umpteen times as a lad too and then onto Frazer Road on my way home to Gardenia Grove in the 60s .

Funnily enough when I moved to Cornwall in the early 80s and eventually got my own shop , one of my suppliers was J G Rolls who wholesaled hosiery and underwear and are at the beginning of Coningswath . Very good for extra large pants !

Looking at the streetview on the link above they are still going .

I actually googled them for their address (Just to show me I wasn't going mad !) and that comes up as Coningswath road too !!

(Their premises used to be a Co op by the way)

I vaguely remember that building being a Co-op but wasn't it derelict for years ?

Took me a while to decipher that 50s map as there was a lack of road names .

But following Carlton Cemetery up it must be the big "Y" shape in the top left square . Cavendish is the dotted part of the Y and Coningswath to the left of it with Cavo school in the middle !
