Captain Popkess in the Sydney Morning Herald

Recommended Posts

His name has cropped up a few times here .

He can be seen at the beginning of this news-reel that describes his new burglar alarm system

The last 20 seconds or so looks interesting on the street scene....any ideas what street ?

From memory it was on High Pavement. It was a typical piece of movie makers' geography.

I do wonder if the City Police chose the location for the demonstration because it was almost directly opposite the Nottinghamshire Constabulary HQ at the Shire Hall.

City Police at the time referred to their shire counterparts as "sheep dippers".

I remember back in 1959 going to a protest demonstration in the Market Square to get Popkess reinstated after he had been suspended by the watch committee. He had launched an investigation into corruption by labour councilors. His suspension became a national scandal and he was subsequently reinstated. He retired not long afterwards and never set foot in Nottingham again. Details can be found on the Internet.

What was the make of the car? It looks like something out of a 1950s NYPD movie?

A wartime ford WOA, Ford V8 side valve engine, the front tyres look bald !
