Compo 10,328
I have to admit to liking the "Scan as you go" thing at our local Tesco. I can see a running total of what I'm spending as I go along. I used to keep a mental check but the scanners are more accurate. The funny thing about them though is that when you get to the checkout the person on the till has to rescan some of your items as a spot-check to make sure that you are not diddling them

If that was the case it would make the hole-in-the-wall cash machines redundant....and that won't do!

It tended to make you feel like a shoplifter. We were rescanned so much that I complained to the manager. It must have had an effect as we’ve never been rescanned since!

jonab 1,644
Slightly off-topic but someone told me once that computer scanners had some special gizmo inside to prevent them scanning (and then printing) British banknotes. Is that true? I know my old scanner had no problems seeing € notes.
loppylugs 8,429
Don't know about that. Never tried it. (Note to big bruvver and any other internet spies. I'VE NEVER TRIED IT! . )

All this was done in the interest of further knowledge you understand.

jonab 1,644
I think we should get back to the subject at hand, sorry for the diversion. I tend not to use supermarkets here. With such a great selection of local producers all with small shops, I would be a bit foolish to give them up merely to take "advantage" of buying factory produced cr@p and lining the coffers of multinational conglomerate businesses.
catfan 14,793
On the other hand not wanting to be ripped off by small high priced shopkeepers.
jonab 1,644
They're not high priced here. They form the life-blood of the community - most of whom are low paid paysan.
loppylugs 8,429
I try to shop the farmer's markets in season. A lot of supermarket produce is poor quality and you don't know where it came from.

Compo 10,328
I have noticed that European farm markets are far cheaper than UK ones. In Europe you can live far more cheaply by buying on these markets - here in UK it is a different matter. The old saying "Rip-off Britain" comes to mind.
jonab 1,644
As far as I understand it, farmers markets in the UK are something of a novelty that travel from place to place such that they are only available something like one day (or half day) a month. In France, there aren't farmers markets as such but there are loads of small, specialist shops, open all week, selling their own or locally produced VERY fresh fruit, vegetables, bread, cakes & pastries, meat, cured pork (bacon, ham, sausages, salami etc.), fish, cheese and so on each shop specialising in their own product area. Everything sold in these shops is of superb quality - any shop selling inferior goods soon knows about it and disappears from lack of custom. I remember Hucknall High St being a bit like that when I was young. It had greengrocers, grocers, bakers, butchers, fishmongers - all separate, all excellent value, all good to excellent. Then Fine Fare came along and FUBARed everything. I can't see that ever happening here, not while the real French are alive!
loppylugs 8,429
Sounds like the small shops I remember in Nethefield as a kid. Greengrocers, bakers, butchers, chemists etc.. Good fresh stuff and the owners got to know everybody. Me mam shopped most days as I remember. We did not have a 'frig. I almost forgot to mention Marsdens. Lots of good stuff there. Wouldn't want yer to think I forgot yer, Ben.
catfan 14,793
UK farmers aren't subsidised as much as the French farmers are.

catfan 14,793
Strolled in to Lloyds Bank in Bulwell this morning & immediately accosted by a bank employee, what have you come in for today for sir ? she asked. To pay a cheque in I said. You can do that over with an automated paying in machine sir she said. I prefer to wait in the queue (1 person waiting) But it's much quicker with the machine she replied. That might be so , but it's a lot bleddy warmer in here & anyway I can sit in the warm here & wait for Mrs Catfan to catch me up, after she's been to Wilko's for the bird food !
catfan 14,793
It's on it's way here Ian, these stupid people don't know they are sacrificing future jobs. Most are bored married middle class women who are working cos they are fed up at home all day.
Compo 10,328
Our bank is closing down in May. They told me to pay my cheques in to the Post Office, using a paying in book. The Caithness county town will be without a Royal Bank of Scotland - shows what Edinburgh thinks of the provinces dunt it?! I reckon they have been taking lessons from London.
