School on Highurst Street

Recommended Posts

anybody know name of nursery school on highirst street 1954

I think you're right as there is a 'Hope Chapel' around there some where.  Any info regarding Radford Local History Society.  Given up on libraries, Nottingham City Archives and such like. Would much prefer a group that meets up once a month or so ?

Thanks for that.  What about groups that meet up every now and then.  Really like this website and read lots of threads but not too familiar with the ropes.  Born Bentinck Rd, went to nursery school on Highirst st according to my mum, then moved to Forest Road East (Colville St) - great years on The Forest and Arbo.

There is currently a "Hope Chapel" on Highurst Street  https://goo.gl/maps/NHNQfESmXQy

That is in exactly the same location as the Nursery School used to be. So I think the case is fairly well proved.

And more proof........ until the 1950s, the top half of Highurst Street (the Alfreton Road end) was called Chapel Street.

Was this the Nursery on Althorpe St, off Highurst St, long single-storey prefab-type? Apparently still there mid-sixties, as was Chapel St. The Hope Chapel was built on the old school site, but was it actually named after the school? Strict Baptists have a number of chapels called 'Hope'.

The 1954 map shows a building situated in the middle of Highurst St, Althorpe St, Montford St and Greek Street.  The only wording is Nursery School.  Apparently, before around 1945,  Fairfield St ran right across it from Highurst St to Montford St. Still trying to find out more about Radford Local History Society.  The archivist retired some years ago but they must still meet up some place some time ? Anybody know anything about the crowd that meet up and exchange memories regarding the Arboretum ?

There is a group called  Friends of Nottingham  Arboretum. Google it and all will be revealed.
