In my opinion the best era for music was mid 60s to late 70s .. Beatles, Stones, Glam Rockers T.Rex and Slade, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Rush, and stacks of others.. The advent of MTV in the late 70s I think saw the demise of decent music, it meant you didn't particularly need talent as long as the video looked good .. There is the odd stuff in the 80s I suppose, and as for the 90s .. well can't remember anything there outstanding at all .. can you ?

BTY.. Nottingham had its own LP in the early 70s featuring local talent of the time it was called 'Nottingham Castle Rock' .. mine's number 000165.

You are probably right about the demise, although the 80's still had quite good musicians who made records that sounded destinctly different, and were not copies or contained rifts from older records.

80'sGroups like the B52's Blondie, Frankie goes to Hollywood, and more.

Regarding the Castle Rock Album, I think I recall seeing this in Selecta Disk, on Arkwright Street. I do not have a copy, and wonder what the tracks are?

The 90's had a talent Vacuum which remains to this day.

Many an hour been spent in selectadisk .. main source of all my music at that time, even though the LPs were 2nd hand you always knew they would play well.. Still got most of the albums to this very day, but haven't played them for many a year due to the advent of the CD.

The Nottingham Castle Rock album featured:

Odysseus.... Aguana

Autumn Design.... Loving

Centuaris.... Road to Damascus

Dave Rossiter & friends.... Don't rock the boat

Moonlight Drive.... Changes

Cisco.... This heavy Load

Down to Earth.... Money Woman

Gaffa.... Playing at Love

Satan's Vomit.... Streakin' thru the Tulips

I'll have to root out the old record player and make the effort to get this stuff transfered to pc, would be nice to hear it again !

You can actually find some stuff from Sons & Lovers, and 6-across (Lester group) around the web if you look.

I remember they were two of the midlands groups that played at the Dancing Slipper Ballroom, during the late 60's.

In about 70-74 I was DJ at the slipper. But the music I played was more Motown and Soul.

Feel the need in me-Detroit Emeralds, still rings in my ears. :o

(Feel your knees in me! as I used to call it) :D

My fave era was the Glam Rock phase .. Long hair, stacker shoes, bell bottoms, then later loon pants (super bell bottoms with something like 36" flare) and the Ben sherman shirts with the panda collars .. occasionally you spot people like it today and think - man ! - what a nerd !

the Dancing slipper - was it in West Bridgford? .. never actually got to go there, we always went the other side of town to the ad-lib in the lace market.

Ben Sherman Shirts!

The missus bought me some from Matalan, only the other week. And very nice shirts they are too. No Panda collars tho :P

The Slipper was above a garage on Central Avenue WB. The ad-Lib (& Cool Cat Bar). I also attended. They used to give free entry tickets out, which I used to use to get in. To me being onlly young in about 69, I used to think was 'The Big Time'. B)
