Cliff Ton 10,435
After the Netherfield toll gate, here's another variation on the theme. The photo is dated 1870, and shows the Toll House half way down Derby Road, near what is now the North Road/Barrack Lane entrance to The Park. If the City Council see this, it might give them ideas. Paulus 541
Where did you find the pic, Picture the Past? Guess the Toll was to come/go within City Centre?
Bilbraborn 1,594
What's changed? Now we have the WPL.
mick2me 3,033
Was this to;; house at the junction of Barrack Lane? On the left it looks like soil has been piled up stop people avoiding the toll by going down Barrack Lane? Or was Barrack Lane constructed later?
Cliff Ton 10,435
According to Picture the Past - who may not be 100% accurate - the Toll House was located 100 yards west of Barrack Lane which seems to indicate that Barrack Lane existed in the later days of the Toll House (which was demolished in 1870). The barracks were built in the 1790s, but I'm not sure when the Lane first appeared.
