The Elizabethan Rooms have some good memories for me also, carni. This is a post that I put on the thread where the photo came from. I'd also love to see some photos of the ballroom because it was wh

i was a floorwalker at coop house during the 90s and have wonderful memories of it especially the staff and some offenders,in particular one old lady in her 70s who stole ladies coats at £40 a time,on

There was an alley to the right of the building when viewed from the front. At the top on the right was a typical old Nottm Pub. can't remember what it was called though. Anybody know? I went past years ago and they'd renamed it with one of those daft new names.

This is the pub at the top of the alley (you can see the alley on the right of the photo). It's called Tap'n'Tumbler here in 1980, but according to PTP it was previously called The Rutland Arms.

Things I recall about the "Big" Co-op were: The gents hairdressers right at the top of the building (1957) Magic days !!! also I remember going in there with my Mother, she was browsing in the ladies underwear department while I hung around. The Teddy suits were in vogue then and although I was never a full-blown Teddy Boy, I was wearing a smart black suit, semi-drape with a single button and 16 inch trouser bottoms. Then, as I was waiting for Mother, I was approached by a lady wanting to know the price of the bra she was holding. I was a very shy 17year old in those days, I had to explain that I wasn't a member of staff. Newbie

Thanks to all for clearing that up. Rutland Arms. That would be right. Nice fancy pub sign too back then. In Cliff's picture you can see an entrance door right off the alley. Used to go in that way and meet my girlfriend who worked in the co-op. She had an older colleague who I think was her section manager or something. A sort of Mrs Slocombe but much nicer. She always used to manage to put a large brandy in her bag and keep it upright as she went back to work! Some trick! :)

@ Bubblewrap. Thanks That looks like it, although I recall it being much dirtier. Where were 'Lewis and Grundy'? Name rings a bell but not much else. Been away now for about 45 years and although I have lots of fond memories, I also forget lots.

Yep. Just checked and I wasn't too far out with the location after 60+ years!

Re #169 Col, Lewis and Grundy were on Victoria St on the left hand side going up hill towards Goose Gate. I believe that they were ironmongers and engineers but stand to be corrected.

I remember being fascinated as a child watching the hammers striking on the hour.

Cliff posted a picture a while ago on old petrol stations, the fuel pumps at the co op- above the escort van the street that the Rose and Thistle was on is clearly visible. It was a Home Ales pub with a familiar green door. The loading bays of the Co op were opposite. The Wilberforce which was almost opposite the Tap did not sell spirits.. Ale only!!

The Co-Op was a great store in the 1960's & even in the 70's. I remember listening to records in the booths of the record department in the basement.

We always used to go in the entrance where the warm air blew upwards and in Winter we would stand there to get warm.

The staircase was very impressive and I seem to remember that there were fishtanks on the ground floor - or am I thinking of somewhere else?

The other impressive thing abouit the Co-Op was the Christmas Santa. You had to walk through a superb wonderland to meet him!

There exists a truly horrific photo of me in my balaclava and NHS glasses, with my late sister in her NHS glasses, being rather too closely hugged by a very iffy looking Co-op Santa. I've done all I can to suppress it.. but it could appear anytime. Meanwhile, here we are in June '55, safe from the clutches of Santa.

Christmas 1969 (the year men set foot on the moon), I was an apprentice electrician working at Coop House, or as we called it, Central.

The Christmas display was a Rocket on its side which you entered to meet Santa. It was a brilliant display, but as I entered the rocket and

stepped out on to the moon landscape on the other side, my experience was somewhat spoiled!

The first being that I encountered was the coop 'Rat Catcher' who was normally based at Meadow Lane!

Thanks Chulla. Little tale to that pic. It was taken in Andover Rd Bestwood Est., as we went to the shop for Mum. Some chap approached us. He'd be early 20s I guess and had one of those old Rolleiflex Twin Lens Reflex cameras. He asked if he could take our pic and we just said yes. These days he'd probably get arrested. Anyway, he also asked our address and a couple of days later he knocked on our door and sold Mum a couple of prints for pennies. I agree it's a briliantly composed and observed pic. And not just because I'm in it. Though it helps ;)

Welcome to Nottstalgia, Kirstypops. I look forward to reading your posts and sharing your memories.

Regarding the Co-op, there's lots of stuff on Nottstalgia so you can spend the cold evenings searching for it all. :)

Here is a thread to start you off. Just click on 'Reply to Does any one remember'
