Hello,   Thank you for your reply Benjamin, and thank you for the welcome DJ. Both are really appreciated.   I spoke to my Aunt, Mum’s sister, this morning and she maintains that t

I'm back Mandie,,,so much to tell you don't know where to start  lol,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,yes indeed Leybourne drive i'm sure was finished just before the war,,,i recall the remnants of an ''Air raid shelte

I moved onto Southglade Rd. (No. 40) around 1951/2, when I was barely 3. Prevously we lived at 76 Glaisdale Drive, Bilboro. Back then, there was no Beckhampton, no Rise Park, or Top Valley, or Bestw

Several times when catching the bus from town back to Rise Park, if a 15 or 16 came along instead if the  89, we would get on it. Both go through the Bestwood estate. This is the first time I have ever been on that estate, and was surprised the first time, to see the houses are identical to Bells Lane/ Aspley estates. All the times I have read posts from those who grew up in Bestwood, I pictured you all living in a different, maybe more modern council house. I just figured it was much newer than my old house. By the way, those single decker 15 & 16 buses should be called Ripley Rattlers, Lol, by tge time we got through Top Valley, we were sometimes the only 2 on the bus. They need more ballast by this time as they almost rattle yer teeth out of yer head! (But I still enjoyed the ride, a novelty to me, riding a bus, no public transport in this neck of the woods)

Katy, if I understand correctly the original Bestwood Estate was planned in the 1930s and some of the roads are already shown on maps as early as 1935.

Well into the early 1960s on Andover Road, just around the corner from Southglade where I lived, some of the houses had 'SP' painted on the front wall in white.  My Mum told me that this was a war time indication that a Stirrup Pump for firefighting after air raids, was  lodged at that house.  It's also an indication that those houses were built pre 1939.  I was told that building was suspended during WW2 and that the houses on Southglade were only 'footings' until completed after the war.

I know Bells Lane estate was built in 1933,  well mam said so, said the houses were 5 yrs old when fhey moved in after marrying in 1938. Dad's cousin round the other side of our road, had the words STIRRUP PUMP on a sign attached to their house, and as a kid, I thought that was the name of their house.

Went to high pavement 63 to 69. Biked up mill street every morning - just like the hovis advert.

Coming down Davids lane, what was the name of the street to the right just before the level crossing? it ran parallel to Vernon road the other side if the railway line.

I did a paper round from the newsagents, and the family who ran the bakery lived a few doors down from us on Bagnall road.

And who was the lady who ran the greengrocery on the corner?

Do you remember the Maltby family who lived on Bagnall Road around the late 60s? Helen Maltby was at Manning with myself.

I think her name was Elsie, but I could be wrong as I was young at the time?

Ref: Maltby.  There was a lad called Maltby in my year at High Pavement.  1960-65.  I can't recall his first name..

Definitely ! Bottom left corner is Southglade / Andover Rd junction, and NCV car sales,  and to the right is the golf club. St Albans Rd runs straight across the middle.

Here is another of Bulwell Common for you Ben, this one is a lot earlier than the previous one so you wont remember it like this, At the bottom left is the bridge linking Hucknall road and St Albans Road then the common and the vast expanses of Bulwell and Bulwell Hall Estate in the back, also the fields where Bestwood Estate was built, what stands out is the railway lines that shaped the area. The common does not look that big , but as young kids it took a while to walk from one end to the other, maybe we were enjoying ourselves too much.

Ben this is the link which brings tears to some of our eyes.

Plans are afoot to build houses on the grounds of Padstow and Henry Whipple schools. Padstow was the training school for our Bens later adventures in life, apart from that look at all the open spaces which will go and the row of popular trees , visible from miles away will they stay or go, I don't know . These trees have been a landmark for generations so I hope they will be saved.

So many people will recall their Bestwood childhood in that area I  feel so sad for the current young children who are unable to wander off from Bestwood Estate across the fields as far as Bestwood road and from Hucknall road all the way to Oxclose lane and Arnold. So much to see and do such a shame gone forever.
