I guess it got to be the same everywhere Trogg.  I remember when Netherfield had a huge railway yard.  Across from it was a large area of wide open land and allotments.  Us kids could be happy around there all day.  Last time I was back, 1997.  It had a huge shopping area and was divided by the Colwick bypass.  I suppose they  just stay home and play video games now.  In many ways we were a more fortunate generation even though we didn't have all the hi-tech toys.

Vernon Park I have spent many hours on there in years gone bye, made many friends from the area where Basford Flats were built. The park was to me an amenity that always under used by people other than us kids. When you think about it wasn't we lucky to live in Nottingham with so many parks.

Out of the park onto Vernon road into Basford along Lincoln Street to Billy Bacons Field, who remembers the wakes on there when many romances started and ended on the same night.

I knew a chap called Waterfall, Les, I think it was. He was a car salesman at Beechdale Motors when they sold Saabs and Jeeps. He was a keen cricketer. I also knew a Heather Plumb but I think she came from Chilwell. Looks like we might be related Ben!

  • 2 months later...

I moved to Southglade Road in May 1947, I was 2 months old & lived there until I was 19. I went to the nursery at the back of the community centre on Gainsford Crescent, then when I was 5 I went to the Infant school in the huts across from the community centre in the grounds that would eventually become High Pavement school. I attended Henry Whipple junior school & by the time I left Padstow had been built. Mr Bond was the headmaster for my first 2 years there being replaced by Jock, Mr Gallagher.

When I was a young child Southglade Road had only 2 houses after Padstow Road & it was the same for Leybourne & Raymede. There was no Deerstalker at that time, it came later. There was a Giles Goddard who lived at the farm at the end of Southglade. At the back of where the Deerstalker would eventually be built & running all the way up to St Matthews Church were the foundations of buildings which we were told were the remains of a Prisoner of War camp but I can't find any record of that. Does anyone know what the buildings that had stood there were for.

I think this has been covered in earlier topics, but I'm certain one of the more knowledgeable members will clarify that.

Best of luck.

This is one for our Ben who counts Bestwood among his specialisms!

Welcome to Nottstalgia, SandraD. My family had friends on Leybourne Drive. Didn't realise the houses were built as late as that.  Hope you'll enjoy this site as much as we all do.

Hello Sandra,,

Born on Leybourne drive 1945,,lived on Andover road until 1967,,also went to Huts,,Whipple and Padstow,,knew many people on Southglade and all over Bestwood,, there is another thread started by cliff ton titled Bestwood estate,,if you look it up you will find much info about the old estate.

If you name some names from your school days i'm sure ill know them,,

Ref the POW camp there during the war,i'm sure there was,,we used to play in some concrete bunkers,,which were probably something to do with it,,and our school football pitch was always called ''the Camp pitch............good luck

Welcome Sandra. I don't have any knowledge of Bestwood but I don't believe there are any records of a PoW camp in that location. A possibility though... you mention Southglade farm and there were a number of other farms very close by. PoWs were commonly used as farm labour so there may have been a small-scale camp to accomodate labourers.

Think you maybe right TBI,,     The Concrete bunker like places,,were on top of the hill,,and would think more likely to have been Anti-aircaft gunnerys,,   however cant think of any reason why our football pitch was always called the ''Camp Pitch'?
