With all these sandbags being used in the flood-hit areas of the country, where are they getting all the sand from? I saw on the news today that one chap had 2000 sand bags around his house ....... Multiply that by the number of houses affected and it's millions of tonnes of sand.

The sandbags are full of politicians broken promises :)

I suppose the sandbags have come from places like Chilwell and Aldershot Ordnance Depots, army ordnance depots are full of no end of things, the army no longer uses but keep just in case.

it comes from the sand and gravels quarry's that's dotted around the country, mainly in the river valley's such as Trent valley, soar valley etc, we are a small sand and gravel quarry out in Lincolnshire and in the last 5 months we have accumulated over 32.000 tonnes of soft sand and over 4000 tonnes of sharp sand this is not including the sales so there is plenty of the stuff about

In the construction industry Mick, concrete, mortar, tarmac etc, the gravel we extract is flint gravel and is classed as "decorative" for gardens, driveways etc.

It get blown about and ends up as dust in the atmosphere and eventually on the fields or in rivers where it's called silt, thats how fields get built up and cover the previous archaeology
