philmayfield 5,359
If you want a picture of a man eating a cheese sandwich come round now - but hurry. But then again there must be lots of pictures on line of people eating cheese. ‘Ye cheese eaters of olde Nottingham Towne’ is a popular site. 2

Scotty2 0
Memories of travelling to school on Barton’s bus from Woodborough, carrying fresh strawberries to the market by the bus station. The smell on the bus still lingers in my memory!
katyjay 4,987
If you grew up in Woodborough, do you know the Mellows?
Cliff Ton 9,951
When the 'good old' Central Market first opened in 1928 most people didn't like it. They wanted to keep the old version in the Market Square where it had been for many years. The new one wasn't popular. The Central Market was anything but....it was on the outskirts of the city centre, almost in St Ann's. Yet now it's seen as some kind of holy grail.
RadFordee 66
@Cliff Tonyes I suppose it was a fair way out of the city centre for folk to walk with their shopping. I think its location was probably why Grandma liked it though, a short walk down Bath st and then would it have been up King Edward st? Grandma like most folk back then shopped at least every other if not everyday for fresh goods.
David sheridan 157
Once got caught inside central market when it was closed, a young nipper could fit through those railings !!!

catfan 14,782
Then all the Beeston buses went there in the 80s when Central Market became the "fish market" bus depot.

Cliff Ton 9,951
And this is Victoria Centre Market (Central Market) today.
philmayfield 5,359
I’ve not been in there for some time. What’s the problem, high stall rents or lack of footfall?
Cliff Ton 9,951
I think one leads to the other. The rents are very high, and shopping tastes and trends have changed. Basically it's something which was designed 50 - 60 years ago and the world has moved on.
philmayfield 5,359
We don’t go in there because of the extortionate short term parking charges.
