Hi Firbeck, a new topic for the railway modelling fraternity. I have loads of equipment but not currently set up . I had a post 1948 midland based layout when I lived in Beeston over 40 years ago, but nothing since due to various house moves. Since arriving at Basford a few years ago I absorbed the vast railway history of the area. Since retiring a couple of years ago I've had more time and money to buy stuff of eBay . When madam retires we hope to move again, somewhere with a large spare room. Failing that, I will do the loft out here. I always fancied modelling Bulwell Common, but I will have to reduce the amount of sidings considerably. Maybe a fictitious station just north of Nottm Vic. I currently have......Lima Crab, Bachmann WD, V2 x4, K3 x2, O4, J39, B1 x2, Ivatt 4MT, Standard 4MT 4-6-0, Standard 4MT 2-6-0, Hornby Brit, 9F , A3, and Stanier CL5. All coaching stock (60) parcel stock (60) and goods wagons (200+) everything is what I saw through Notts Vic in the late 50's to early 60's. (No poncey Great Western stuff here). The stock I've got from eBay are mostly used and I've honed my weathering skills greatly. I've got to decide what track to purchase as mine is old Hornby, only fit now for sidings. Future purchases will include J11, D11, O2 and a Standard CL5, and maybe another couple of B1,s.

So come on folks, let's hear what you model, ideas for the future and what you would model if cash were no object .

A very old friend of ours has had this model railway set up in the basement of his various homes around the United States. Thought some of you may be interested to see a few pics. [/url]

Well just returned from the exhibition, very interesting to see what some people have achieved with such a small scale. Tons of books on all sorts of railways could have spent a fortune, luckily left

Morning Basfordred,

I have always wanted to create a model of Ruddington Station in the late 1950's to early 1960's.

Although the station buildings are long gone, others further south still exist, so getting plans etc would not be a problem.

However I have not seen to many photographs of the actual station and the area up and down the line.

Someone has told me that a fine model exists at the GC North centre near Ruddington.

A dream layout would be Grantham in the late 1950's or one of the country stations like Barkston.

I am helping to create a virtual history of Grantham station using pictures words and plans.

Anyone interested can see it at www.returntograntham.wordpress.com I am always interested in hearing from anyone who went there.

Basfordred, you seem to have everything there except an L1, B16 and O1 - are models of those available? How about a Hymek to send through occasionally light engine on delivery to the Western Region??

I'm the same as Smiffy49, and would have a model of Grantham station in the late 1950s/early 1960s if I had the money - and the space!

Realistically, for me at any rate, a 'virtual model' is more likely to be the answer on Railworks or Train Simulator or whatever it's called now, like the re-creation of Nottingham Victoria that someone occasionally updates us with on another thread.

Hi imp, forgot about the L1. Hornby make one that's on my list plus another 9F. I can't stop buying V2's I think they were the most aesthetically pleasing of any loco. No O2 yet, but I think Heljan are in the process of releasing one. No B16 yet , someone may do one one day it hope, plus a K1 or a K2.

Crikey, what a reaction!

My brother had a Hornby Dublo LNER 'Sir Nigel Gresley' set for Xmas in 1950, no doubt as an appeasement for having to put up with my birth. This was expanded by the acquisition of a spurious LMS N2 tank engine goods set later on. He eventually screwed the track to a piece of green painted baseboard which was kept hanging in the shed roof by an ingenious system of Meccano. More rolling stock was purchased, always from the kiosk in Central Market, Bristol Castle was the next engine, always a bad runner.

Eventually things evolved into a complicated system of baseboards linked by bridges with an overhead engine shed off a flyover, this was always put up on Xmas day in order to run whatever HD present either of us got that day.

Eventually I took it over, I recall my dad buying us things very cheaply from the Elite Cinema model railway exhibition, held on a top floor above the cinema space, a boxed, HD Standard 2-6-4 tank for 10 shillings for my birthday, a bloody fortune in those days no doubt.

In the early 60's when I knew Bilbraborn I went mad and repainted everything pre-nationalisation style, we used to take the stock round to a particular kids house that had an amazing HD layout set up in a spare bedroom complete with illuminated village and colour light signals, you could run the trains around with the room lights out, even the carriages were lit up.

Eventually my stuff ended up in the loft, thanks to a kid on work experience, I was told they were valuable. When I moved down south, I collected HD with a vengeance and built a layout on chipboards, I've still got it, but it hasn't been used for years. My plan is to get this thing up and running when I can, not authentic I know, but good fun, that 3-rail track is a bugger to run efficiently. I had a go last year and had my 8F running around quite happily.

My brother and I out in the garden, 1950's, all that stuff is still here, including the Dinky Toys.

My parents new the old boy in the kiosk in the middle of the old Central Market. We always knew him as Mister Cyril, I don't know what his sir name was. I used to get my Dinky toys from there, plus Meccano and Bayko. Happy days!

I also went down the Central Market. I still have my Triang & Hornby railways, but no longer the Dinky's or the many Britain's soldiers or even the Bayco (all have got lost in transit).

My childhood was with Tri-ang OO gauge as opposed to Hornby Dublo third rail. My dad built me a baseboard with all sorts of tunnels and inclines. I remember his ears going back like a cats when my mum told him off for hogging the model railway instead of letting me play with it. I started with the basic Princess Elizabeth and 2 carriages.

More recently, due to lack of space, I turned to N gauge and built, firstly a GWR between the wars country terminus. Then later I acquired a baseboard and set up an oval in the garage. I loved the operations but tended to find building scenery highly relaxing. I have nothing now having given most of my stuff to my grand sons. When I retire I might just go back to N gauge.

Years ago I used to take my 2 sons (still at primary school then) to the annual exhibition at the Victoria leisure centre at Sneinton. I was very impressed by the various OO9 gauge layouts. I am sure it was the Rev, Awdrey himself who had an exhibition there.

Sorry Pete. I forgot all the other stuff I had. I also had an original Graham Farish train set. Trouble is with Model railways is the cost of everything. I would love to just have the time to do all these things. Can anyone remember a specialist model railway shop in an old school at Woodborough Village?

one day i intend to build a model railway based on the G.C.R. around basford/bulwell i do have space once i've sorted out my garage, but i've never really built a big layout, and i may be looking at something like 5-10 years to complete! i've made a start though,-

I remember Millholme Models, moreso when they moved from the old site in Epperstone to the old school building on Lingwood Lane. I couldnt spend too much time in there as one of the owners smoked a pipe and there was a constant cloud of rough shag drifting through the shop but the setup was great

As a lad, I'd while away an hour or two in Wendy's toy shop on Westdale Lane, Mapperley. As the owner knew my parents, she didn't mind me hanging around.

I even managed to make the odd purchase once I'd saved enough pocket money.

Certainly an Annesley one, you could barely read the cab side number most of the time, and as for the lime scale, horrendous. Some locos looked almost grey.

Something you may be interested in, on BBC2 on Wednesday (8pm)...

Mel Giedroyc and antiques expert Mark Hill help collectors in crisis as they comfort, catalogue, curate, clear out and showcase precious items. In doing so, we get a vivid insight into the lives, loves and dilemmas of the owners and discover what drives them to collect on such enormous scales.

This episode follows Stuart, whose love of all things railway has led to him building a life-size 1950s railway station in his back garden to house his 1,000 piece collection of signs. But his passion doesn't stop there; Stuart has not one, but three huge collections. The railway collection spills into the purpose-built underground station, then there is the 'petroliana' in the garage - signs and equipment from petrol stations - and finally an entire street of Victorian shops in his attic to house his 6,000 items of packaging.

Does anybody remember the Model Engineers Exhibitions at the old wembly stadium.

The last time I went must have been late1970's early 80's they had orditoriums sectioned off with people recreating WW1 & WW2 dog fights (brilliant) Other areas were dedicated to other remote controlled gadgets, Boats, military vehicles including tanks, and all associated radio contol systems and servo's etc.

There was also a vast range of 0, 00, H0 and N Guage model railways, plus various accessories.

One year they had the old guy Raymond Baxter from Tomorrows World demonstrating Japanese built Robots

When I was a kid , they had some exhibitions at the Victoria Baths, and one I believe at the old Ice Stadium. (50's)

I went to one at the Victoria Baths, and still have the catalogue (cover below). I think it was mainly models rather than railway layouts so that may have been the only time I went.

Included in the catalogue is the following page showing the miniature/model railway at Valley Road which has featured on another thread here in the past;

If I remember correctly, the show held this weekend originated in Bulwell and later transferred to the Victoria Baths, where it ran for many years. It moved a few years ago to the sports centre next to Harvey Hadden Stadium in Bilborough. Because that is being refurbished, the exhibition has temporarily moved to a school next door.

I try and go every year. It is not so much the model trains themselves as the amazing scenery and high quality craftsmanship in general that interests me most.
