DAVIDW 1,683
TV News report that appeared on Facebook today about the Kilpin plaque on Mansfield Rd .
Braddy 160
It's a shame the shop front is a dump, should have been cleaned up first. Not a good impression for the Italians back home is it. But it is good he is being remembered now.
DAVIDW 1,683
As far as I am aware they had great difficulty in tracing the freeholder of the building and nothing could be done to the property until they had the owners permission . Apparently there is now a new owner who has come forward since seeing all the Kilpin publicity. He has given permission for the plaque to be put up once funds are raised . Hopefully the frontage will be improved some day . Maybe AC Milan could fund a few tins of paint ?
AndyB 5
Contact was made with the new owners of 191 Mansfield road the same day as the bus and bus shelter outside were named Herbert Kilpin on the 22nd October. They have granted us permission to mount a commemorative plaque on the building once the renovation work is complete.
DAVIDW 1,683
A good Guardian article on two of Herbert Kilpins distant relatives retracing his journey from Mansfield Rd to Milan . https://www.theguardian.com/football/the-gentleman-ultra/2017/mar/02/herbert-kilpin-ac-milan-long-lost-relatives-nottingham?CMP=share_btn_fb
FLY2 10,108
Well that's three Nottingham - Italy football connections. Notts - Juventus and their black and white striped shirts, and Forest and their Garibaldi Red tops adopted after Guiseppe Garibaldi and his Freedom Fighters who came to prominence in the 19th century quest for Italian Unification.

DAVIDW 1,683
To celebrate the 150th birthday of Herbert Kilpin the makers of the film The Lord of Milan are giving a free viewing weekend https://vimeo.com/386993166 Watching it now and there is quite a bit of lace market history at the beginning . Also a segment with Mark Hateley 1
MargieH 7,600
Thanks for that link. I've just watched the film and thought it was really interesting, even though (shock, horror) I don't like football
DAVIDW 1,683
Only disappointment is that Nottstalgia didn't get a credit for identifying Herbert's correct birthplace !
Cliff Ton 10,464
And it's a pity the Photobucket Blackmail Dept made a mess of old posts.
