What is this insect?

It's a bee fly. Feeds on nectar. Flies April to May and it's larvae feed on grubs of solitary bees.

That proboscis looks a bit dangerous.

If anyone was rushing around she called them a scopodittle, e.g. "she's running round like a scopodittle, I wish she'd calm down."

If it moved erratically Mam would have called it a scopodittle. Silverfish, ants, leatherjackets, flies, me when I was rushing about: all would be called scopodittles by Mam..

Silverfish as I remember looked like tiny silver woodlouce, horrible little creatures that would live under carpets, underlay and bathroom floor mats

Really glad to be back on line everybody I've not been too well these last few weeks, in and out of QMC but things are starting to brighten up.
