TBI 2,351
# 22 It's on the Living in the past picture I posted dated 1905. It's appears to have quite a large clock on the front, it might have been some sort of Tram control point. But to me the building looks like it might have been there quite some time. Did they have any sort of bridge-keepers or similar in the 19th century. Or perhaps some sort of watch-station? ( I do see the police hut by the side of Turneys is shown). poohbear 1,360
I said about 1910 because It does not appear on this 1901 map...but does on a 1914 map
Cliff Ton 10,454
Does this answer it?. This map shows the abbreviation as WM; and there is another just across the way on London Road. According to Ordnance Survey, WM is an abbreviation for Weighing Machine.
TBI 2,351
It may originally have been the equivalent of a Weigh House. I understand during the 19th century, certainly up to the latter part, the drays coming over the bridge were weighed and a duty levied. Also, the style of the building, with raised gable ends above the roof, is also suggestive of pre-20th century. That's my tuppence worth anyway.
TBI 2,351
Just remembered this thread. I have a book with a picture which includes the little building, described as the Tram Pay Office, this was circa 1920.
Chulla 4,946
#30. Well I never! In the 1920s they had to scan their City travel cards before getting on the tram. As they say, there is nothing new under the sun.
