mick2me 3,033
In our site header the gate house shows deterioration on the lower sandstone blocks? Is this due to that part covered by soil for some time?
Bilboro-lad 294
I wouldn't have thought so, more like the top part has been rebuilt. The top part shows little sign of weathering and looks like the blocks were mechanically dressed, so is therefore much later.
Bubblewrap 3,815
The castle gatehouse was rebuilt in 1908 there is an account of this with photographs in Edwardian Nottingham Volume 3 By Richard Iliffe & Wilfred Baguley
Cliff Ton 10,458
This is what the gatehouse looked like before it was "modernised" in 1908.
DJBrenton 738
I had a Blue Badge guided tour once and she showed me something I'd never noticed. The inside arch has an inscription in old Norman above it which I think corresponds to the newer one on the outside in Latin.

Cliff Ton 10,458
And just down from the gatehouse, in the area where the Robin Hood statue now lives, used to be the Riding School.

Trevor S 2,003
Give them time Mick. Plenty of room for one or two minarets up there with high powered speakers attached. You would be able to hear the call to prayers in Slab Square!
