Cliff Ton 10,457
It's not the one you might first think of. A lot of people here will remember the Milton"s Head on Milton Street which disappeared under the Vic Centre. But it seems there was also another pub called Milton. Half way up Derby Road towards Canning Circus, this old place has had a layer (or two) of paint stripped off. I assumed it had been a 19th century town house, and there can't be many of those from that era - and in that location - which have survived almost unaltered. Nosing around on Picture the Past, it seems it wasn't a house, but an ex-pub - The Old Milton's Head, shown here in 1926. It closed as a pub in the 1940s so it can't be used for the next meet-up. You can see the building here - where the cars are - but it looks like its pub life was over by then.

Dave 48 847
Anyone remember the name of the " American" type diner that used to be next to Baker & Plumb on Derby Road about where the Strathdon Hotel is now. I have got a feeling it began with " L" but just can't think of it.

DAVIDW 1,681
This is from the Evening Post 09.02.1945 . The last paragraph mentions the redundant licences for a few pubs . These redundancy notices appeared throughout the previous year so I would say it closed in 1944. https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2900/14232247335_3bd22dcc61_c.jpg
Cliff Ton 10,457
That newspaper report mentions the Old Milton's Head, and also two other now-gone pubs - the Old Angel on Stoney Street and the Old Anchor on Walnut Tree Lane. Coincidence that all three start with 'Old .........' http://www.picturethepast.org.uk/frontend.php?action=printdetails&keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;NTGM002213&prevUrl= http://www.picturethepast.org.uk/frontend.php?action=printdetails&keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;NTGM004308&prevUrl=

Cliff Ton 10,457
Don't tell me the Old Angel has closed? No, it hasn't ! You're right and I'm wrong The Old Angel hasn't closed at all; the one mentioned in David W's post was the Nag's Head on Stoney Street, which is not the one I linked a photo of. It's a complete dump, and has been for as long as I can remember, but I've always liked it.
benjamin1945 16,139
The Old Angel has special memories for me,i had two uncles who were members of their fishing club, and used to take me with em when very young early 50s,then when i was 15 i used to drink in there, until one night i ordered a pint, and a voice behind me said,YOU BUYING ME ONE PAUL? it was my form teacher from school. Cliff Ton 10,457
I've now discovered where the Nag's Head was. Almost next door to the Old Angel.
DJBrenton 738
Near the bottom of this article, the guy who bought the house that used to be the Old Milton's Head discovered previously unknown caves underneath.
