The Pianoman 1,532
Would a person who was in jail at the time a census was taken appear on that census?
Cliff Ton 10,457
Not quite, but....... http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/prisoners.htm
Bilboro-lad 294
John Denver sang a song about the census. "You fill up my census, like a night in the forest".

Rob.L 1,088
Don't forget to check the workhouses, too.
carni 10,094
And Nottingham Lunatic Asylum on Mapperly Hill. People ended up in there for all manner of things. They didn't have to be Mentally ill! Times were hard in those day's. I found two of my ancestors in there, listed as Lunatics on the 1881 Census. I know ! I know! Both of them were listed as married and both working. One a Labourer and one in the lace industry, so heaven knows why they ended up in there? Though I didn't know these people, It makes me very sad to think of how they suffered, probably just for being poor.
Chulla 4,946
This thread reminds me of a question I have thought of asking for some time. If a soldier dies in a foreign country, or, if someone goes down in a ship, who makes out the death certificate. Are the person's details sent to their local Registry Office, or is it done some other way.
The Pianoman 1,532
Thanks for the input folks. Given me some more to think about.
Michael Booth 7,364
Chulla (#8), I'm 99% sure that the details are sent to the local Registry Office.
annswabey 599
Prisoners should appear on the census but may just be listed with their initials, rather than full name. There are indexes to overseas and military deaths on the FindMyPast website. If the right death appears, you can send off for the certificate, just as you would for a death in England

annswabey 599
Babs You can get the death cert but of course it will only give her cause of death and age, and her usual address, if she died elsewhere. You may be able to get her hospital records, depending on whether they have survived and when it was
