The first home videp recorder was invented & made here in Nottingham.

The Telcan, produced by the Nottingham Electronic Valve Company and demonstrated on June 24, 1963,[5] was the first home video recorder. It could be bought as a unit or in kit form for £60. However, there were several drawbacks: it was expensive, not easy to put together, and could record only 20 minutes' output at a time in black and white.[6][7][8]

Is that the one that brought down the Lincoln Cathedral spire, at the time making it the tallest building in the known world.

Apparently not. According to this site the spire wasn't built until 1311 and collapsed (not due to an earthquake) in 1548. However, a previous version of the cathedral was destroyed in an earthquake in 1185:

Captain Athelston Popkess, the Chief Constable of Nottingham City Police, was appointed "Air Raid Precautions Controller" for the city - long before war broke out in 1939.

Taken from an excellent book currently on loan from the library. Battle of the Flames (Nottinghamshire's fight for survival in WW11) by David Needham.

An excellent read, full of good local photographs and eye witness accounts for anyone interested in that period of Nottingham's history.
