sparkly1 7
Not sure whether I'm posting this in the right place ( knowing me, probably not!) I've recently discovered that my gran worked for a short time at the munitions factory at the bottom of Aspley Lane during WW2. This surprised me as it's not the sort of work I would have imagined her doing as she was a seamstress! Anyway, I digress! Does anyone have any information about the factory please? Even if only the name to start me off on my research.Fingers crossed & thank you.
Chulla 4,946
The building at the bottom of Aspley Lane (still there) used to be a Players storage factory until it was taken over briefly by Rolls-Royce as its tank engine factory, making the Meteor engine, based on the Merlin engine. However, it was soon taken over by Rover, who were the main manufacturers there until they moved back to the Birmingham area.

Chulla 4,946
Yes, the tall building, I think it is/was called Ascot Works.
DJBrenton 738
Robert Shaw & Co in 1937. I believe Ascot Works was the building still standing plus the demolished one that used to be Speedo. http://www.britainfromabove.org.uk/image/epw054122
sparkly1 7
I'll ask mum if any of the names ring any bells, although she does suffer from some memory loss now She would have been 12-18 during WW2,
Dave 48 847
I think you will find that both buildings on that site have now been demolished.
Cliff Ton 10,435
Yes, the tall building, I think it is/was called Ascot Works. And this is what it looked like on Ascot Road. Ascot Works is/was the one on the right. https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@52.966815,-1.184082,3a,75y,176.83h,85.85t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1s12nObnR1oG11tjbxAjVsYg!2e0?hl=en

FLY2 10,108
There used to be a jitty that came out near Skills garage on St Peters St, and also to Ainsley Est I think. This started at the end of Ascot Dr.
DaveN 1,118
The Collins Warehouse (advertise in the Post alot) are on Ascot Road. The road was when Imlive near there a dead end and then there was a footpath alongside soem allotments and continued to a bridge over the railway line and then to St Peter's Gate. Speedo also had a building on Ascot Road.
Bilbraborn 1,594
Collins is still there in the old Co-op building which was Players before that. Speedo has been demolished. There were munitions factories large and small all over Nottingham.
LizzieM 9,497
Yes Bilbraborn, my Mum worked in a munitions factory down the Medders. It was in the Trent Engineering factory, near Mundella school apparently ....... I don't know that area so don't even know if Trent Engineering still exists.
Cliff Ton 10,435
A number of buildings on Ascot Road have been demolished since the earlier Streetview images were taken, and the road now looks like this, with a noticeable gap on one side. https://goo.gl/maps/pD1Ba And see also, this thread http://nottstalgia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=13991&hl=
mercurydancer 1,104
The building which was the engine factory was taken over by the co op, and used as a depot for many years for non-food. Its still there.
TBI 2,351
#14 Lizzie, Trent Engineering was based at the end of Wilford Crescent East, opposite the Boys Club and Trent Bridge School. The site was later taken over by the printing company, I think in the seventies. I used to live just round the corner. It was a quite a small company though and I was unaware it was ever used for munitions.
