I know exactly what you mean…….There are tens of thousands on friends reunited but not many who leave their details, how on earth do you find the right person from a list of hundreds….makes my blood boil when someone joins and then doesn’t leave any clues to who they are…..

I realise there are many ways of spelling Alseybrook (Aulsebrook(e) ) but I wondered if you were related in any way to the people that owned the bakery at the bottom of Blue Bell Hill in the 40s and 50s ?

mick2me #6:: Interesting. David Miah/Meah, Sen., owned the `Kho-i-Noor` on Alfreton Road which I would think is the one you refer to. Good stuff in there, I used it a fair bit in the early 70s. I didn`t know that he started his career on Arkwright St. Do you recall the location of that one? There was a `Star of India` adjacent to the overhead rail bridge,

on left going into town.

There was another on the opposite side not that far away, I don`t recall the name, it will have been very close to Archie Tizley`s tackle shop.

David (Sen.) also had a daughter living just off Loughborough Rd. W.B.

There was an Indian restaurant on Arkwright Street, left hand side going towards town, called the Oriental, opened in 1961 or 62.

It had an illegal casino upstairs, I once had a very nice win up there (strip deck 5 card stud).

Re #16,

Star of India was on the right hand side of Arkwright St. under the railway bridge as you came from town

Miah's restaurant was on the left hand side after crossing the first road (Waterway St?) just before the next road

that was quite a sharp turn back running towards the first road you crossed.

Star of India was where I had my first taste of Indian cuisine, about 6.30 one Friday evening in the mid 60's if I recall correctly. Beef Madras. Hot and very red. It certainly encouraged me to drink more Carlsberg.

FLY2 #20 Snap! Wife and I had our first Indian there as well. Mine was brilliant, wife thought she was going to die.

mick2me #18 That`s the one. Under `Oscroft`s` bridge in Cliff ton`s pic. @ #19 and down on the left. Fancy that being where Miah started. Someone recommended I could get food there to bring home. Takeaways as such were not up and running at the time, approx. `67/8 although someone will probably correct me. I went in this restaurant, asked for some food to take home. There were no polystyrene containers etc. at that stage. They just kitted me up with two or three empty tins they`d had catering supplies in. The tins were about 3/4 gallon each, like giant soup tins complete with raw, sharp edges around the top. The nosh was good when I got it home though, no complaints.

Under the bridge in Cliff`s pic, on the right at the first corner, there was a used car seller around 1963, Stan Batch. Anyone buy a motor from him or know of the place?

There was an Allsebrook who owned a newspaper shop in Hucknall opposite the Byron cinema in the 50's. He was a mate of my old man's (I think they went to Henry Mellish together) and I delivered newspapers for him for ages. I used to have to pedal to Hucknall from Papplewick in the morning, pick up the papers then back to Papplewick to deliver them. Then I had to pedal back to Beardall Street school in Hucknall then pick up the evening papers for delivery after school, all for a quid!!
