tomlinson 879
Curious bit of news this morning. Apparently It is intended to pay doctors £55.00 for every diagnosis of Alzheimer's so that the 'sufferer' receives early treatment. Hmmmm! Any thoughts?
... 1,411
Yes the report also said how many billions it costs the country, all I will say is they will sell your house before you get any real symptoms, courtesy of your doctor's written evidence,I would tell GPS to tell the government to Stick their £55 where the sun dosent shine.Do they honestly believe that any government is going to expand that sort of spending because they are concerned for our welfare, the BBC should question their real motive . mick2me 3,033
I thought that was what doctors were already paid for and supposed to recognise, without being paid a 'bonus'?
Michael Booth 7,364
I would have thought that doctors would be doing that already without being paid the extra money. On the other hand, it would be a good thing to get an early diagnosis of this terrible condition. I haven't read the report myself but if it means 'spending a penny to save a pound' then it's not a bad idea.
mick2me 3,033
The alternative view: Doctors who fail to recognise early symptoms of any progressive life changing conditions, should not be doctors.
Smiffy49 590
Does this also mean that policemen should be paid extra for spotting and solving crimes? How about bus drivers for keeping to the speed limit and safely getting to their destination? Dentists for advising on dental health or spotting the early signs of tooth decay? I've forgotten what the other thing was...... better book an appointment with my GP. Hold on, that takes about three weeks, I might remember what it was by then. Smiffy PS:- I am not being insensitive here, I do know a few people with dementia, the trouble is one of them no longer knows me....
plantfit 7,535
Well I started off this year with a spell in Lincoln county hospital, refered there by GP,Kidney infection, stones etc, came out after a few days and GP diagnoses high blodd pressure "your going to die if we don't get this sorted!" more or less sorted now, well out of the danger zone, now he's refered me back to the Lincoln county to get the specialists to look for cancerous tumors/cells,I suppose when thats sorted it will be checks for dementia,oh well I probably wont know about that then, when the medical people get you they don't let go until they find sommat Rog
Ayupmeducks 1,730
GP's are "basic" Doctors, most have no speciality field, and misdiagnose many symptoms/illnesses.. Many diseases can be misdiagnosed at the present time, many Doctors wouldn't recognise a "new" disease or even many of the old diseases, as they have never seen those diseases. Take for instance, if a patient has bubonic plague, how many Doctors would recognise it??? They wouldn't is the answer, and I'd bet many would misdiagnose Alzheimer's. ... 1,411
The beauty of the NHS is that we have a wealth of experts at our disposal and we should celebrate the fact,as long as you have a GP that does not think he knows everything ,then usually you are going to be ok,because rightly so you will be refered to a specialist.A GP is a filter , I have been to see my GP this week and I am lucky he is a diamond, the fact that you are being screened for everything can only be a good thing,if you had a really bad GP you probably would not be here to complain. The major concern with dementia is the care you receive when it as set in ,that is where there are major concerns.
loppylugs 8,424
Looks like you are on your first steps to an "Americanized" health care system. I hope I croak before the greedy $&@%#'s get their paws on me.

tomlinson 879
Can the older ones amongst us expect to be called forward for an Alzheimers check, as we are for flu jabs, shingles jabs, routine blood pressure checks etc? I assume such a check would be voluntary or do those in power wish to tuck us away somewhere? I think we should be told!

barclaycon 569
The price of healthcare is becoming ridiculous. Have you tried to get a doctor's appointment recently ? Or worst still, have you tried to get some dental treatment ? They want to charge you £40 for a check up, £70 for a filling. I know all about how the NHS is overburdened and I have some sympathy with the fact that it's supposed to be for this country and not the whole world, but some of us have been paying in our whole lives and now that we are of an age where we need healthcare, it's just not there. The system has been badly abused but they are punishing the people who have done the right thing and contributed for about 40 years. I've currently got a dental problem that ideally would require an implant, but they are not available on the NHS and I don't have a spare £2000. All these wonderful advances in dentistry and medicine, but not for you old suckers !
... 1,411
#13 I know Roger it is frustrating, and it would be nice to be free of these things as we get older.#14 there must be a deficit all these years we paid in for us never knowing our pot would be used for anyone still not allowed to have an opinion, sorry state facts it's not pc ,so just hand over what they want,if our kids work hard they might be able to retire at 80,
Bubblewrap 3,815
£55 to tell me I'm demented? I could tell them that for free.
Ayupmeducks 1,730
#12, You should have your own BP set up and check it at least once a week, just remember to check it on both arms, or wrists if you have the el cheapo model. You should be maintaining your BP at around 120 to 130 over 75 to 80. once you get over 130 it's considered high. I'm usually around 78/125, not bad for a 67 year old. Bilbraborn 1,594
I suppose that by charging for that, we can probably treat the rest of the world free of charge. I suppose for me If they start charging to visit the Doctors, it will be like the dentist. I don't go because I can't afford it.
