Acker Bilk RIP

Recommended Posts

It was Acker Bilk (referred to as 'Utter Bilge' in the Daily Mail cartoon, 'Rufus & Flook') who started the traditional jazz revival of the 50s - 60s. Saw him at the 'Dancing Slipper' and in concert at the Albert Hall. Always entertaining and a fashion icon of the fancy waistcoat and bowler hat. Another talent who will be missed! R.I.P.

The last time I saw Acker Bilk was around 1983 ish, in Oman, at the PDO club. We had a front row table and it was a great night with all the old favourites played. There were many Omanis in the audience as well as Ex Pats and the evening was enjoyed by all.

Another sad loss. RIP Acker Bilk

I saw him at the Dancing Slipper too, probably early 70's. I then saw him perform at The Old Vic on Fletcher Gate when it was an Old Time Music Hall type venue about 20 years ago.

A great performer, may he rest in peace.

I saw him at The Slipper too.............

Stranger on the Shore was a haunting tune and I still hum it to myself when wandering in desolate places near the sea.

A strange one this, but I can remember an uncle of mine (back in the 60's) saying he wrote the words for Stranger on the Shore"

Was this a joke or were some words later composed for the song?

Take a look here. According to the notes on the Youtube page .........

The tune of this song was originally composed as a clarinet piece by Acker Bilk for his daughter Jenny. Subsequently, it became the theme tune for a BBC TV drama series also named as "Stranger on the Shore", first released in 1961, and became the best-selling instrumental single in 1962 in the U.K. Then later in 1962, songwriter and music publisher Robert Mellin wrote lyrics for the instrumental piece, allowing it to be covered by singers like Andy Williams and the Drifters..
