Joe Stockwood's on Wollaton Street.

Well here goes my first post on what can only be described as an excellent forum.

Back in the mid to late 60s I was an apprentice electrician working for a company called J B Hadrill of 72 Hounds Gate, a regular stop off for me and my electrician mate was to have lunch at Joe's cafe on Wollaston St.

I have told many people about '1 up' and they have looked at me as if I am on the verge of loosing my marbles, to the point where I was starting to chalenge my own memory.

Now, I'm sure Joe was a keen fisherman, again from cloudy memory, but I am fairly certain that '1 up' was pie, chips, peas n gravy, with a sizzling fried egg on top of the pie......... Such happy memories from a time long past.

Apparently Joe Stockwoods dad the original owner of the cafe specialised in tripe and mash.

My grandad who was living in St Anns at the time use to go to Stockwoods with his own bowl on a Saturday for tripe and mash to take back to his family for tea.

You could say it was an early take away place.

One up at Stockwoods was pie, chips and peas.  It was "up" because the kitchen was downstairs and plates were delivered by a lift.

Saying "3 up" a few hundred times a day was quicker than "Pie chips and peas three times please".  A group of us used to go when we were at Trent Poly in the 70s.
