Nottingham Hostelries and pubs

I almost missed this when it first appeared, but there’s quite a few memories for me in it.

I was at Jacey’s (Heathcoat St) quite a few times during the mid-80s; always seemed to be Andy, Boris & Keith playing. And it was always well attended.

Only ever went to the Hippo a couple of times, during its second version in the late 80s; not really my scene, I was just dragged along by others. So I don’t think I could re-name myself Hippo Boy.

Playhouse Bar (now Cast). In the late 60s-early 70s that was the place to go, especially if you were a rock/metal/denim follower. I only went a few times but envied people there who were a few years older than me, and who looked like they could really have been in a rock band.

I returned to the Playhouse Bar almost as a regular in the 90s, and it was always busy, especially when there was something on at the Playhouse or the Albert Hall. But around the turn of the century it suddenly seemed to go out of fashion - or people forgot it existed - and it became a bit of a ghost town, with only ever half a dozen people there.

Clinton Arms, Shakespeare St - what can you say. Only ever went there once, when it was at its prime with the topless barmaids. You wouldn’t guess that so many people could look so awful. The sort of thing which could turn you off women for life - but it didn't.

Pubs are funny places,I suppose the people in there make it.I rarely followed the crowds, the bouncers at Yates's would say "no jeans". Yet the most fights took place in there- mainly by trousered/smart shoed thugs!! Depending on departure spot..polish club..then the Grosvenor/forest tavern/Vernon Arms/Arboretum/Spread Eagle/Mortimer's and then Blue Lagoon. Horse& Jockey/Catchems/Pear Tree/shoulder/haven/cricketers and then Alfreton rd.for a meat pall.we had some less salubrious nights too!! A geezer in the Generous Briton, sat beside me decided to set fire to himself ( as you do). If you were with a lady: Mint Bar/Albany cocktail bar/County Tavern/Maypole/Test Match/Mayfields and then on to a restaurant.. Waterfall/Beaujolais/Something Special/Ben Bowers/. Anyhoo enough.. Dripping buttie and a mug of char is calling.

Stunned recently how many of my old haunts are gone or are kebab houses. Belle vue has gone,as has The Scotholme. Johnsons Arms is still going.Obviously if a lady was being escorted, the loggerheads was a no no!! But I'm trying to remember that wine bar just up from Trattoria conti,Mayfield's wasn't bad,Charlie Parkers on Hurts Yard...if I was doing a rod that night ( suit, t.shirt, white naval shoes). Sunset& vine were often frequented, if it was a warm evening a stroll up to The Arboretum would be considered the norm.My fave with a Clay Cross beauty was Hardy's,next to Loch Fine rst. Strawberry blonde drink- flock of seagulls-and Something Special on Derby Rd.for a late supper.

Thanks, some of us have often wondered. Seen ABK several times over the years.

As I've said previously, there's nothing like live music. A little pub or club and a group on.... Paradise.

I appreciate that several members have been DJ's , in fact you've even referred to one as a legend. However, I think they were partially to blame for the demise of bands on in pubs. They should stick to weddings and Works parties.

I well remember at the Dungeon one Saturday night as a crowd of us we ready to depart for a party. Suddenly, a couple of girls started squealing that Pete Stringfellow was appearing the following weekend. FFS I yelled out, another gobby F er with more records than he knows what to do with. Get John Mayall on FFS. That went down well as you can imagine.

I remember one night in the Polish club, the group leader announced that "it is nearing midnight, so we'll finish"..I said:"why what happens after twelve, you turn into a singer?"..unbeknown to me the whole place had gone quiet at that moment!..shovel and a deep hole!!

A crowd of us were at a pub playing cards one afternoon and it was getting a bit rowdy. The jukebox was loud and a baby had been screaming incessantly when I suddenly stood up and yelled out ' Shut that f***ing kid up.

You've guessed it. At that precise moment, the jukebox went silent, as did everyone else. No, I've never been back!

I for one am never sick of hearing about live music. Can't fault it. I love listening to live albums with my eyes shut and headphones turned up to 11.

Please can anyone tell me the name of the pub at top of Woodborough Rd going towards Mapperley top? It was the Duke of something - and then another pub not much further up? I lived on Corby Road at the time and they were my regular haunts, it was late seventies. :)
