Dreams or nightmares

Recommended Posts

I often dream about old houses with mazes of rooms. I wander round and imagine how I'm going to decorate and furnish them. Sometimes, I find rooms I've never seen before within the house where I live. I've read that this symbolises aspects of one's personality or talents which have been neglected or undeveloped. Occasionally, there's a very unpleasant atmosphere in the house I've found and I have to leave quickly.

Most often...and my favourite...are dreams of flying. I just lift my arms and fly! Love it. It's always a disappointment to wake up and find I can't do it!

Jill, I know our beliefs differ considerably but I think what you say about dreams of houses is true.  Dreams are rarely about what they appear to be!  I know what most of my dreams mean but that is because I know myself and my life.  I know there are broad outlines for interpreting dreams but the specifics will vary from person to person so only they will have insight into what they may mean.
Many of my dreams have a spiritual dimension too but they are personal to me so I won’t share any of them on here!

I have flying dreams too btw and I’m pleased you leave the unpleasant houses quickly!

Jill, I sometimes have a similar dream about a house. In this house I climb about five staircases and each level has several bedrooms which I have never explored. Also not flying but I dream I can levitate maybe thirty feet from the ground. Not had this dream for a few years but used to dream it regularly.

You obviously have hidden talents which you are unaware of! .... next time you dream about the unexplored rooms,  you’ll have to go in and have a look at what’s In there!
I used to have dreams in which  I could levitate up to the ceiling, usually when something was chasing me.   I remember I used to think that maybe I could do it when I was awake, but I never dared try just in  case I could!!!!

Along with 'Vivid' dreams every night.......whilst i'm semi awake first thing in the morning i often  wonder where i am,,,ive lived in quite a few parts of the country and during my working years frequently lodged away,,,early days from aged 18 started my lodgings at Big Mauds in Coalville the gradually over the years progressed to nice hotels throughout Britain,,,anyway it often takes me a while not only to realise that job in Cardiff or wherever has finished,,and that i now live back in Notts.

Edit....Is there a word for that Jill ?

A few years ago master jumped out of bed and ran into the bedroom wall, it was just like a Tom and Jerry cartoon, called 999 as did not know what to do, he had stars floating above his head but refused to go to hospital. A few weeks after this he fell out of bed (well this is what I thought he did) but he said that the yougest son was swiming and could not get out the swmiming baths so he dived in to help him. Youngest son was about 40+  I booked him an appointment to see GP The meds he was given were for children that wet the beds and could be addictive, so he would not take them.  Also the GP said we should sleep in separated rooms.  We moved house and during the night he tired to stangle me, another night he ripped my night gown off, he has kicked e out of bed, punched me in the face, but the worst thing is I can not wake him, oh! and he swears, and does he swear. Next morning he can not remember any thing. Getting fed up and after seeing 6 GPs he ask to go and see a speacialist, When we spoke with a Professer she listened and just nodded, as soon as i said that he woud swear like a trouper, she sat back and said REM!!  (Rapied Eye Movment) never heard of it. She explained that when you sleep your body sort of freezer's even though you dream , but with REM this doe's not happen you live out your dreams.Master now is on meds that work but it took 5-6 years to findout what he had.    PS  often people with "Parkinson's" get REM it's all part and parcel of it.

Yes, our Ben. There is a word for it. Hypnopompic. The state of emerging from sleep. Conversely, Hypnogogic, is the state leading into sleep. Both can play tricks on the sleeper as the brain is not in a fully wakeful state.

Oh, Mary! I'm sorry to laugh. It's just the mental images your description provoked.

I believe, many years ago, a man was acquitted of the murder of his wife by strangulation after his doctors proved to the satisfaction of the jury that he suffered from a sleep disorder.  Normally, once asleep, our brains exercise a sort of paralysis over our bodies to prevent us acting out our dreams. In certain individuals, this doesn't happen, hence what happened to your husband.

When my sister was a child, she walked, talked and did all manner of other things whilst asleep and had no recollection, when awake, of any of it.

It was once thought that dreams only occurred during REM sleep, which is one of the lightest parts of the sleep cycle, and not during the part when we are most deeply asleep but I believe this has now been disproved. It is said we only recall dreams occurring during REM sleep, which is often just before we wake.

I often used to have a flying dream, although it hasn’t happened for quite a few years now. Maybe I’m getting too old.

What usually happened is that I’d start by flying perfectly well, zooming around all over the place (as you do), but then gradually I’d start losing my ‘power’ and I’d begin to struggle to keep myself airborne. I’d start coming close to the ground and I’d lose my ability to stay in the air. I’d have to exert more effort to achieve less of a result.

Then I’d wake up.

Been there done that when learning to land, the instructor screaming "pull up pull up" doesn't help you know...

@mary1947  it must have been such a difficult and frightening time for you before your husband’s sleep disorder was recognised and treated.  Difficult for your husband, too, as he must have felt really bad when he realised what was happening.

I’m pleased for you both that the meds he is on are working.

i used to sleepwalk when I was a child and even now, very occasionally,  I suddenly sit up in bed in the middle of the night with my heart thumping only waking up properly when I’m already sitting up!   I sometimes shout out as well which wakes Paul up!

He says he used to sleepwalk  when he was little and so did all of our children.....

My older sister nearly drove me bananas when we were children. We shared a bedroom at one stage and bedtime routine was a nightmare in itself.  She had an elaborate ritual of looking under her bed numerous times, to make sure there was no one and nothing there before she got in.  What or whom she thought was lurking there goodness only knows!

Since she is almost 8 years older than I, my bedtime was earlier than hers. Inevitably, I was asleep when she came up to bed and all the under the bed inspections palaver woke me up.  Then, once she was in bed, we had to have the lamp on all night because she was afraid of the dark!  I cannot sleep with a light in the room. I need total darkness. So that was it, as far as I was concerned. I'd lie awake all night being entertained, once she fell asleep, by the constant stream of gobbledegook as she prattled away the hours, sometimes getting out of bed and, dragging the quilt behind her, wandering round the house.

At this point, my mother would be out of bed, following her as she went downstairs, wandered about touching various ornaments before eventually returning to bed.

In the morning, my sister was as fresh as a daisy while the rest of us were exhausted!

When I was 7, my grandfather passed on and my sister moved into his bedroom. Peace at last! She still looked under the bed, talked all night long and slept with the light on but I shut my door and rejoiced in the darkness and silence

Gradually, the sleepwalking stopped but, even in recent years, when she has stayed with me I've heard her talking in her sleep and her bedside lamp is on all night. She's 70 now!

Oddly, although she talks quite animatedly in her sleep, if engaged in conversation she doesn't respond and I assume she doesn't hear what is said to her.  Just as she didn't hear me, as a 5 year old, yelling, "For heaven's sake, SHUT UP!"

Paul,

I have a recurring dream where I'm still working.  It always turns out that something is proving frustrating or awkward. So I say to my bosses.. "Listen.. I've had enough of this..I've worked way beyond where I need to and I'm off!"

Then I wake up and I realise I retired 6 years ago... which is all well and good except I no longer have the option of storming out...
