FLY2 10,108
Never been a Ford fan. I had a MK 4, aubergine with a black vinyl roof. It was never the same after my alcohol induced altercation with an island. I had two, P100 pick ups. First was beautiful, but the bodywork was crap. Second was never the same after I had a new engine in.
TBI 2,351
Only ever had two Fords, way back, Mk 1 and Mk 2 Granada Ghias. Both lovely motors. I always wanted a Mk1 Lotus Cortina but as fast as I saved, the more prices escalated.

Cliff Ton 10,435
Is that Nottingham? I don't recall the police ever used an MGB, although I know some forces used sports cars. Must be pretty rare picture, wherever it is (I've just looked up the registration is Lancashire).
Robbie 39
Well spotted Cliff Ton, no it's not Nottingham hence putting the photo on Classic Cars thread. The photo was taken in Lancaster town centre.
Cliff Ton 10,435
This is the example I was thinking of when I mentioned police sports cars. In the late 50s a Daimler Dart was considered a good idea for police work.

Vintageann 66
What makes a car a classic? More than it's age I think. I have just retired my 1999 silver Ford Puma, bought in desire having watched Steve McQueen in the advert which introduced it. Saved every tax disc and the little Puma owner books encased in silver wrapping that were sent out initially to new owners. In lovely condition for its age, very low mileage, full service history, I can't bring myself to tell you what I was offered in part exchange! So after giving it a final polish I have sorned it and will visit it from time to time until I can bear to part with it and can find someone who will love it as it deserves.

littlebro 234
What is a classic car - the ultimate $64,000 question. In 46 years in/around the motor industry I have never seen a definition of 'classic car'. In fact, does the term relate to 'a car' or the 'design/model'. For example, most would agree that the Morris Minor 1000 is a classic/iconic design, but does this mean every example of a MM is a classic car? I would say not. Insurance brokers generally sell classic policies for vehicles 20 years+ old - but surely some vehicles reaching 20 are not 'classic' in design or per car. The HMRC treat cars over 15 years old with a market value greater than the list price and worth at least £15,000. The Puma is not generally regarded as a 'classic' design and is not really a classic car - but if it has a comprehensive history, is in good order (does not need to be perfect), in an acceptable colour etc then it may have a market. Sadly, even if mothballed for 10 years the modern classics soon start to lose value if put back into daily use.
Vintageann 66
Every time I go to Autokarna I see vehicles that are familiar to me, either owned by my dad or granddad in the 50's or 60's, or owned by my oh and I from 1967 onwards. We admire them and the condition they are in. They evoke memories of times we owned them, we wish we still had them, but then remember that we always needed to PX to be able to put down the deposit on our next car. I'm full of admiration for anyone who has the skill, talent, dedication, time and cash to maintain these vehicles and allow the rest of us to admire them. For me though it's not about the market value, it's more to do with the emotional attachment and appreciation of an inanimate object that I somehow developed an inexplicable affection for.
catfan 14,793
#55. My lad has just scrapped his "V" reg Puma in silver ! Mint engine but rough bodywork. A future classic ?
Cliff Ton 10,435
In some websites and magazines, it seems that anything is a classic once it has reached a certain age. A case of "it’s old, it’s not made any longer, so it must be a classic" but that lets in some questionable rubbish. Does rarity come into it? Is something a classic if there are only a few left, even though they used to be common. In which case I’d nominate a Mk1 Sierra; they aren’t that old, but I haven’t seen one for years, and they were quite revolutionary at the time.
TBI 2,351
Anything after a couple of decades or so starts to acquire classic status. You'd wonder who'd bother with old nails like the Austin Allegro, wedge Princess, base Escorts and Cortinas etc, but you do see them lovingly restored. Back in the day they were treated with derision. There's an old saying though, a bit coarse, you can't polish a turd.

DAVIDW 1,674
Just back from Holland where old Mercs still seem relatively cheap compared to the UK . Here , 80s Mercs seem to be appreciating in value . Not sure how hard it is to import old cars into the UK though and of course they will be left hand drive . Mileages seem much higher too , even taking into account they are in kms . Some here , using the keyword search "oldtimers"if the link works . http://m.autoscout24.nl/resultaten?atype=C&makemodelmodelline=47&mmvco=1&make=47&mmvmk0=47&model=&mmvmd0=&zipc=N&makemodelmodelline=&version=oldtimer&pricefrom=&priceto=&fregfrom=1970&fregto=&kmfrom=&kmto=&fuel=&gear=&PowerType=kW&powerfrom=&powerto=&powerFromRaw=&powerToRaw=&zip=&lat=&lon=&myPlace=&zipr=200&cy=NL&bcol=&doorfrom=&doorto=&seatsfrom=&seatsto=&uph=&icol=&prevownersid=&offer=&ustate=N%2CU&emclass=&custtype=&adage=
