I am so glad my sister told me about this site. Having just moved back after more years than I care to remember I am by myself a lot. I have joined a couple of things at the library which get me out to socialise a bit but I still miss my close friends. Being quite shy I do find it hard to approach people I don’t know, I tend to get clumsy, tongue tied and blush. Don’t have the same problem with dogs probably because they don’t judge just accept you as you are. So this site has been a godsend as you have all been so welcoming.

Jonab, I rather like the sounds of Rosie.

I never lost my accent after leaving Nottm in 1966, but I have had so many little Nottm sayings bought back to mind since joining NS. I only moved 70miles, but local sayings differ so much.

Don’t take this as a critism, it isn’t, when I have joined in I have been welcomed, even got some likes, perhaps it is just a case of gaining confidence on the site?

I suppose it's the same when you move to a new house or a new job, you soon get to know people. You are getting plenty of "likes" so keep up the good work.

I have said this before to new members its worth sticking with us. I am not Nottingham born and bred my only claim was to marry a man from Basford, i have always felt welcome even been laughed at a few times but Nostalgians are a lovely bunch.

Stavertongirl. You say you are shy and it Is hard to go up to folks and join in. I think a lot of folks feel like that, me included, but get yourself to the next meet up in December and they will make you most welcome. Unless you have made 250 or more posts, you won't see the meet up thread, if that is the case, someone will let you know the details.

Hey Carni, I've got you beat.  I'm  4 or five thousand miles away and I'm still learning new Nottingham stuff.

You are welcome Staverton girl.  I am enjoying your posts.  Hope you stay with us a long time..

Well really, I wouldn't say my house was that bad!

Swear words sound better in another language.

I agree to an extent but I don't think Mme has a clue what the swear words mean, she certainly doesn't know the right circumstances in which to use them. What it is, I think, is that French swear words are quite bland and too complex. Also, they don't have the plosive nature of English - just uttering the right swear word(s) in English gets rid of a lot of tension and pent-up anger, I'm sure you will agree.

As an example, the French 'merde' means the same as sh1t! in English but merde has a very soft pronunciation compared with its English counterpart and the French equivalent of f*** off - va te faire foutre - is too complicated to use as an expletive.

Yes I agree Jonab. Those two words are practically the same in Italian. Drop the e and add an a for the first and the second va e fatti futere ( never had to say these or write them so dont know if the spelling is correct )

Jonab, I agree entirely about swearing being an outlet for tension and anger. This last year my language has become appalling and more venomous. My taste in music has also become much more intense, dark and forceful. I don't know whether it's to do with the state of the world or what, but I've become so less tolerant, amusing and caring !

Quite a few years ago we used to have large family Christmas lunches at ours, for which my wife bought everybody a small but well thought out table present. One year she bought several of the gents a small book called “The Little Book of Essential Foreign Swear Words”. Well, you can imagine the hilarity as we all threw abuse at each other -  especially as more and more wine flowed.

It had all of the usual well-used curses, but also some quite surreal ones worthy of Monty Python - such as “Are you dribbling, or do you have rabies?”, and “Can you drink the water here or does it taste of p### like your beer?”.

My favourite, “I have you down as a bit of a pigeon licker.”

Merry Christmas!

What I do, Beekay, is tap “Activity” in the menu, then “All Activity” in the sub-menu underneath. All of the latest posts are then shown in descending order.

Otherwise you’re faffing abaht trying to keep up from the main forum subjects - not easy!

Apologies if you’re already doing this!

I read Beekays post as meaning he can't keep up with the hopping about IN ONE THREAD. i.e.not keeping to the subject. He'll soon larn! That's what everybody does! It's the Nottstalgia Way.

When one wants to go to bed and turn ones tablet off, does one have to sign out or just switch off the tablet. I realise this sounds daft, but then again I am a daft bu**er. One doesn't want to do it wrong.

The only thing you can do wrong on here is prove to be more attractive to the ladies than Benjamin1945!  The consequences don't even bear thinking about.

Yes, because if you go to the very top right corner where it will say Beekay, then click on 'sign out' on the drop down you'll be logged off instantly. Otherwise, it'll still show you as being online, when in fact your not.
