Liverpool - Things to do.

Recommended Posts

We stayed in Liverpool a couple of years ago whilst looking for property.

We liked the place but never got a chance to look round. Always said we would go back.

Now planning a visit later in the summer, any advice on things to see?

Depends on what you want to see Mick.....the tourist stuff ie the Beatles, Albert dock, ferry , liver buildings are all well documented....

Try the cathedral area, the beautiful architecture of Rodney street, the philharmonic pub ( just to see the loos ), china town. The Tate gallery......

If you have the car, then calderstones park, allerton road, penny lane area.........

Hi Mick,

I have been to Liverpool three times in the Last 18 months and it is a wonderful city to visit. Wendy's daughter was at Uni there so the main reason for going.

We did the usual tourist bit like the Cavern , Albert Dock, Maritime Museum ( very good if you are interested in the Titanic) the Metropolitan Cathedral and a must visit is The Philharmonic Pub. If your other half is into shopping then Liverpool 1 is the main shopping area and you can find anything you want there.

You are spoilt for choice for places to eat. We really enjoyed Liverpool and would certainly go again.

Years ago, when the 'Empress Of Canada' liner burnt out and was on it's side still in the dock, I went on a school visit to Liverpool and there was a scenic railway which travelled the full length of the docks. I don't know if it still operates.

We visited there the other week. Parked the car, walked across the street to use the Crowne Plaza loo, as we came back into the reception, trying to sneak out without being noticed, the young lad on the desk asked if he could help us. Busted! So we said first time here, needed to know what to do etc, and he booked us all on a Hop-on-hop-off bus for £6 each. Best bargain ever, cheaper than paying the bus company!. 2 day ticket, pity we weren't there longer. Great way to see the city and decide what to get off for. We only did the 2 cathedrals, but would love to go back for a few days next time.

Oh forgot. Biggest disappointment, the Ferry Cross The Mersey is only for foot passengers, and we didn't have time to hang around to ride it over and back. Soooo wanted to do it, was hoping we could take the car on then head south to Chester.

One of the destinations of the ferry is New Brighton which many years ago was a popular destination to rival Blackpool, including a tower which I believed burned down. In the late 60s I was stationed at RAF Sealand (dump) just outside Chester and visited New Brighton whilst there. Sadly it was very run down. It may have improved by now.

The beauty of growing up as a child in Liverpool, were the days trips by ferry or by car through the Mersey tunnel, to New Brighton.....the amazing funfair, Harrington drive, the lido and the funny fort ..........

Then like many seaside towns it became run down and no longer a place to visit ......not sure if Skegness was like that, as I have never been ?

First time I went to Everton with Forest, a lorry was being stripped of its load of boxes of John Wests salmon .

I thought... That's a bit upmarket for them...... Oops, here I go again !!!!!!

Many years ago I delivered to Liverpool 2-3 times a week.

If I had to have a night out it would NEVER be in Liverpool.

Sleeping in the cab they would still have your wheels off !

God awful place.

I married a Scouse girl 43 years ago. People I was introduced to the first day I arrived in Liverpool are still friends. I've lived in an around Liverpool since. As with any town, there will always be idiots and crims, but the vast majority of true Scousers are open and honest. What you see is what you get and they act the same, taking strangers at face value. They don't back away from you in the street like they do in That London, in fact they'll often go out of their way to give you directions or show you to some place.

My old Nottm DJ ing mate Dave Pickering is coming up to L'pool tomorrow. We'll meet at Lime St station then go for a feed and several pints We'll certainly spend some time in the Cavern. Over the last few years, we've met up like this regularly. I've shown Dave some bits of Liverpool he didn't know and he's introduced me to staff and musicians at the Cavern who are now firm friends.

A few weeks back I was in the Cavern talking with Dave, Franny the manager and Tony Coburn of the Cavern Club Beatles, who had just done his regular afternoon solo spot. I mentioned that I was thinking of bringing my brother and his wife to the Cav the following Saturday evening as they were coming up for the weekend. Within seconds both Tony and Franny offered to 'get me in' to the very popular 'Cavern Club Beatles Show' which is held in the large new 'Cavern Lounge'.

When we arrived the following Saturday, an orderly but large crowd of ticket clutching folk were waiting to be let into the Cavern lounge. Franny appeared and introduced me to another member of staff who escorted me, Mrs Col, my Bro and Sis in Law through assorted passages, stairways and even an underground car park and via even more passages from which we emerged into an empty Cavern Lounge. Franny showed us to our (free) and reserved seats and the bar chap very kindly served us with a round of drinks before the rest of the crowd were let in via the normal entrance.

When the crowds came in a very lovely young lady asked if she could sit next to me. Naturally, I agreed and also offered to make room for her fella, but he preferred to stand. The girl was a fashion designer from Nottm, and was very interested to know that my daughter is also a fashion designer. Sitting next to my Bro were a couple from Derby and the following day I was told that at least four 'friends of friends' from Nottm were also there. It seems Nottm folk like Liverpool.

Anyway, a good night was had by all.

I can recommend the Ferry trip if you have time. The new Central Library in William Brown St. is wel worth a visit even if you can't read. Take the lift up to the roof terrace and then the amazing stairs back down.

Couple of my pics.

Albert Dock etc,

Cavern Club and the Cavern Pub across the St. If you have time and book ahead you can now do a trip along the Manchester Ship Canal from Liverpool to Manchester on a Ferry, returning by bus.

See the Cathedrals. The view from the top of the Anglican one is awesome, though you do need a bit of a head for heights as you climb some bits of stairways on the inside of the tower.

The home of photographer Mr Chambre Hardman is worth the admission. http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/hardmans-house/

Any number of pubs, clubs and eating places. And shopping of course. Liverpool One if you like it, but don't forget the Bold St area and nearby Chinatown too.

It's a good place.

We had a lovely few days in Liverpool and met some great local people, including a fantastic lady who was a voluntary guide in the Museum.

The only problems we came across was a large anti slavery demonstration by Somalians outside the museum.

The Slavery museum is highly recommended visit, as is the Titanic/Maritime museum.
