MargieH 7,594
#11. Dave, I heard a cuckoo a couple of times this year - in late April I think it was - so perhaps it depends where you live and how much noise is around?
Dave 48 847
#13 I think you are right there Margie. Even though I live in the country I have not heard one for years.
PeverilPeril 3,268
"Po 'n Nooooos" = Newspaper sellers. A variation was "Noooos 'n Po", depending on which area you lived in..

darkazana 1,736
Whistling kettles are still available and can be heard on campsites Have to say I thought I would hear a cuckoo this year at Sandringham being in the middle of the woods, but not once, nor come to that have I heard a woodpecker, though often heard them at our old house. Don't hear ice cream vans playing their chimes as they drive round the houses, nowadays they just park up at prime locations and wait. Air horns on cars that were so popular in the 70's

Smiffy49 590
The clank clankity clank of trucks being shunted in the railway yard. The far off sound of a steam locomotive's haunting whistle in the dead of night. The sound of Father Christmas's sleigh bells on the roof (sure I heard them once!) My Mother wishing me a happy birthday... Good news on the TV. The whirr of trolley buses.

Smiffy49 590
The screech of chalk on a blackboard. From halfway along the Vic Embankment, the tumultuous sound of the crowd when Forest score. Children reciting their times tables (do they still do that??) Now I live miles away, the sound of "Little John" chiming in Slab Square. The bell inside the petrol pump at filling stations. The gentle reassuring hiss of the paraffin heater. The pips on the radio (might be on Radio 4 - not sure?) People eating pomegranates with a pin. Hat Pins (my Grandma & Aunts had deadly ones!)
