Windows 10 At Last !

Each to their own Enigma !

Only downside I can see so far is the option to download & install updates. Reading between the lines Microsoft will be able to block pirate copies of Windows by having free access to check your PC for updates to see if your copy is legal.

Anything which prevents karaoke happening is a good thing.

PHEW, I'll tell you what; I have been all Shook Up AH HAHA and Panicky for the last 19ish hours. Late last night while I was getting settled for my last dose of Nottstalgia for the day, I looked at my

I like all the different pictures it keeps showing me (and asking me if I like them - very polite)

As a follow-on from post 18, I finally managed to fix it.

My mistake was to add a local admin user AFTER having set it up with my Microsoft account. Rolling back to Win7 and reinstalling sorted that.

But I did have another problem in that none of my Office 2013 programmes would work. After much hair-tearing, I ran the Office Repair tool, which told me there was no product key - it must have got lost somehow. After trawling through two years of emails, I found the one from Microsoft with the right key. Adding that fixed it all.

Regarding the privacy thing, I don't really have an issue with it. I don't go on dodgy sites (except perhaps here? ;)), and never put anything sensitive (credit card numbers, online banking, etc) on https web pages, and only where I know the site.

Yes, I've read several sites that say that Win 10 is spying on everything you do. Takes about thirteen pages of info to find out how to disable these "features?". After all that how do you know such intrusions are really switched off? We really don't know what is spying on us but apparently Win10 is quite blatant about it. Maybe that's why they made it a free upgrade. No one wants to pay to be spied on. As they always say, "There's no free lunch."

BTW. Got Linux dual booted on my desktop everything works great. Got to do that on the wife's desktop. Pray for me if something goes sour there. pieinface I'll be in the doghouse for a week.

I think my next upgrade will be Linux Dave. Big problem these days is most folk are "appliance operators" I've come across many people I've helped out who don't know a browser from a search engine, the more you try and help them, the more confused they get.

I've seen on several forums that since Windows 8, the OS constantly communicates with Microsoft servers. So much so, that people with limited broadband allowances (10Gb a month) are finding that they are using up all their data in no time at all - even though they haven't been particularly busy on downloads.

I've also heard about Office stopping working quite a lot too.

Something to do with the key not being verified.

Ayup, John. I don't think you will regret Linux. There is really only one program that I would like to use that has only been developed for Win/Mac and that is a program called "Hauptwerk" A VERY big virtual organ program that works with a midi organ console to allow you to play various pipe organs located throughout the world. Converting my older electronic organ to midi would be costly and time consuming. I mostly only use my computer to look at the web a bit. Especially NS. Do a bit of word processing, e-mail, and video editing. Linux can do all of these, fast. takes up much less room on the HD and runs much Win stuff if you want. Firefox, Thunderbird mail client etc. you can also download a win Emulator, called Wine. This enables you to run most Win software that would run on XP. Updates are smooth and you get to choose what you want. There is a vast pool of software free for the download. More than I will ever be interested in. Their Office suite program "Libreoffice" seems as good as anything M$ has going and works just fine with my older HP printer. Much less worry about virus's. I could go on, but I guess you could say I'm a convert.

So.....10 days or so of Windows 10.

Has it changed the world yet ?

I must say I'm suprised at the lack of enthusiasm at the launch of this 'exciting new epoch in computing'.

Seems to be something of a whimper. The impression I get from various different forums is that people are majorly concerned with the big increase in invasion of privacy.

By default you are 'opted-in' to a whole raft of options that will quietly track your behaviour and use it to fire targeted ads at you, as well as keeping tabs on your location history, data from messages, calendars, contacts and goodness knows what else.

The head of Microsoft, Satya Nadella (the guy who looks like a Bond villain) always seems to talk in that bizarre 'megaspeak' where everything sounds like a press-release statement. He's probably the one who suggested the non-sensical tag line that accompanies Windows 10 adverts. 'A more human way to do'.

What a load of tosh.

The Daily Mail reported that updating to Windows 10 caused major grief for one man as it automatically made his porn collection into a slideshow and used it as a screensaver. And to make matters worse, the malfunction was discovered by his wife, who was greeted by the explicit images first thing next morning.

But, it probably remembered her birthday and made some suggestions for breakfast before then providing some targeted ads.

A couple of weeks been running Win 10, & all the privacy things turned off !

O/S the most stable yet with absolutely no issues, upgrade & installation was effortless too.

Not one targeted add or pop - up !

Hi Technology fans.

Has anyone on here had any experience running Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Premier (both Elements 10) on Windows 10.

I have looked on a number of sites and the responses are mixed, from no problems to won't work.

FYI I will put the same post on the photography thread

Thanks

I use Elements 13 and it works fine, the only hiccup I've found is that the Windows Picture Viewer can't open Fuji RAF files - that will be corrected eventually; I can get around that by converting the files to DNG or using a different viewer. No problems with jpegs, tiffs etc.

PHEW, I'll tell you what; I have been all Shook Up AH HAHA and Panicky for the last 19ish hours. Late last night while I was getting settled for my last dose of Nottstalgia for the day, I looked at my screen and Windows 10 had started installing. Could I stop the Bo99er. No Way.

Every time it has come on screen to say it is ready to install in the last few weeks, I have clicked the cross and put it off for a bit longer. Last night I must have clicked something and started the thing installing. I couldn't stop it and just went to bed all dejected and fed up.

Anyway, I followed the instructions and with a little help from my Son, it is up and running. Panic. Naagh. Not me, I'm a Nottinum Gel.

We have just hit a couple of snags, which threw us a bit, but like most new things, it will be OK when we have got used to it.

I haven't had the nice pictures yet Margie, I look forward to that.

Well, I don't know about 'recommend' but it seems fine for what we use it for. On a different subject.... The version of WORD which I'm now using is far too complicated, with stuff on it I never use. I much preferred the older, simpler versions.

We have three PCs running Windows 10 two were upgraded from Windows 8 (free) upgrade & one installed on a new PC.

I find this version to be the best yet once you get the hang of it & disable a lot of M$ apps ringing home. I find the most intrusive program to be Google. to nosey for my liking, it will track & report back to Google with everything if you let it. Disable that lot (easily) & you're away.

M$ Office ? Why anyone would want to throw money away for this is unbelievable ! There are many free alternatives available, which not doing all the Office functions (who needs em) work very well.

I didn't think I had started it either benjamin, I just assumed that I must have! Perhaps it just took over while I wasn't looking, as well. Anyway, it installed on Edge (I think that is what its called), I couldn't get on with it, all sorts of things were causing problems for me.

My son has changed my default? back to Chrome?, so I have Windows10 on Chrome, everything is a bit slow, but at least I know what I am doing again.

MargieH, I am getting the pictures now, when I turn my Laptop on. Very nice they are. The one today is like a big swirly black hole,( In the sky) only brown. Work that one out?
