Hmmm. This one is going to take some thought. I dunno why, but I sort of lost active interest in 'rawk' after about '71. Nothing against it at all. It just sort of passed me by. Apart from the obvious and massive hits by Sabbath/Puprle etc., and a few songs by others, I really don't know anything.

For a while in the early 2000s I went every Friday night to a pub in St Helens which featured rock bands. They mostly all tended to dig up all the usual suspects. 'Smoke on the Water', 'Alabama', 'Whole Lotta Rosie', etc.,etc. Most of the guitarists were into what I call 'widdly wanky' stuff. There were occasionally much better ones who would actually use silences as well as endless chopping and widdling to make a musical point. Much more my style.

Here's a first five off the top of my head and before I've woken up...

Eight Miles High. Byrds

Somebody to Love. Jefferson

Im A Boy. Who

Stay With Me. Faces.

And finally. Not sure if this qualifies as 'rock', but it's definitely Rock and Roll... and it rocks me..

Slightly off topic but if you get the chance, see The Jalapenos. They are from somewhere up this end (North West) but they get about a bit. The finest full on, good fun, hard rockin' pub band I've ever seen. They rock their way through 50s, 60s 70s etc., blues, R&R, Rock, even TV themes and all done with great humour, without taking themselves seriously, and in awful shirts.
