Cliff Ton 10,457
Another composite of various aerial photos. The dark building towards the rear centre is Victoria Station. The light-coloured road coming in diagonally from the lower left is Shakespeare Street. Trinity Square still has the church. The factory at the front edge is Lambert's on Talbot Street. terence12 725
cliff ton #1, any possibility of saying what streets are on the triangle of houses bottom left opposite lamberts,
Cliff Ton 10,457
It's this area. Lambert's is the "Lace Dressing Works" at an angle, so the houses you refer to are between Chaucer Street and Goldsmith Street, and perhaps Auburn Terrace.
terence12 725
cliff ton, thank you, cleared it up, the wife lived on Auburn Terrace for the first couple of years of her life, before moving to Glaisdale Drive, first picture of possible Auburn Terr. i have seen again many thanks
Cliff Ton 10,457
Surprisingly, Picture the Past have two of Auburn Terrace. http://www.picturethepast.org.uk/frontend.php?action=printdetails&keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;NTGM013411&prevUrl= http://www.picturethepast.org.uk/frontend.php?action=printdetails&keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;NTGM013412&prevUrl=
barclaycon 569
Great work on those aerial photographs Cliff ! Enjoyed those a lot. As a matter of interest, have you ever seen an aerial shot of Trent station ? I've been trying to find one for years to show the complicated track layout. The nearest I've come is in Geoffrey Kingscott's book. But 'Britain From Above' must have one - surely ?
Cliff Ton 10,457
"Britain from Above" didn't go over there unfortunately. As an alternative, how about this from the 1940s; it's fully zoomable. http://maps.nls.uk/view/101601738
loppylugs 8,427
I notice the church on Trinity Square was still there when this was taken. It looks so much better than anything placed there since. Anybody remember what year it was torn down?
Cliff Ton 10,457
According to Picture the Past, who have several photos of the church, it was demolished around 1957-58. http://www.picturethepast.org.uk/frontend.php?action=printdetails&keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;NTGM009395&prevUrl= http://www.picturethepast.org.uk/frontend.php?action=printdetails&keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;DCHQ502714&prevUrl=
BeestonMick 263
If you knew the ROF Nottingham layout as below the first time you see it as it is now is mind blowing!!
Trevor S 2,003
Cliff Ton, once again, thankyou............... Question....What is that large quadrangle shaped area above Goldsmith Street and to the left of the intersection with Lower Talbot Street in #1, please. It looks like a school playground?
LizzieM 9,507
# 11, BeestonMick ...... what's there now? At first I thought that THAT was the ROF but the road system around there looks more recent.
EileenH 496
#11 BeestonMick - what year was this? I should be able to see the house where I was born if it was before the Medders was torn down but, as Lizzie says, it looks a lot more recent.

It looks like a school playground? I wondered when I first saw it. That is now the site of the Newton Building at Trent University (Polytechnic); so I reckon what you see in the photo is the beginnings of the demolition work for what became the Newton Building.

EileenH 496
Hawthorn Street, just near the junction with Kings Meadow Road.

I should be able to see the house where I was born if it was before the Medders was torn down but, as Lizzie says, it looks a lot more recent. I don't live in Nottingham any more and haven't for a good few years. I was looking for Cremorne Street and a friend sent me the pic. I have no idea what's there now. All I know is the Medders were demolished and I assumed the ROF was as well. I remember the first time I came back to the UK from South Africa, circa 1975, and my old man took me to a Notts game on boxing day. As he drove past my mouth hung open for at least ten minutes. The Kings Meadow Road I used to drag myself up for nine years was gone - I couldn't believe it.

Cliff Ton 10,457
I think the ROF factory photo is very late 1970s or early 1980s. The diverted Queen's Drive (the main road in the lower half) was opened in the late 70s, but in the photo the Castle Marina housing hasn't appeared yet and that was started in the mid 80s. EileenH 496
#19 Thank you Cliff ton - the Baths were just across the road from the top of our yard. I never went into them. We had the trad tin bath in front of the fire. I was the eldest so I got the cleanest water!
Guest
The 'white' oblong space on South Sherwood st,has been cleared for the poly?
.... 23
Thanks for this image and maps on this and the other threads, K. Interesting the site of the House of Refuge (Female) off Chaucer Street as there is a modern day Women's Centre providing some similar services almost on the same spot on Chaucer Street to this day. Couple of observations on the original overhead image. The white area mentioned as a clearing for the Trent Poly Newton Building to come would not cover the whole area of that building, even before the recent modernisation I don't think. This is unless it was built that shape and extended later, I'm wondering if it was? The Newton Building and it's underground car park as was would have covered the area to the left of it up to where the old library can be seen on North Sherwood Street. The map below also shows 'Bilby Street' between Goldsmith Street and Dryden Street which was replaced with a dog-legged set of steps now called Bilby Walk. This is on NTU land these days, hence the irritating amount of times the university closes this useful cut-through for various reasons, currently stalled building work that hasn't moved for months. I'm also intrigued by the large mill building (I assume) at the bottom of the original image. Looks like it's pretty well on Clarendon Street which now has a line of mature town house buildings used for professional purposes.
Guest
I can see the Newton Building wouldn't fit..maybe the plans changed?..I wonder what that mill is??
