On this day in 1942, the Merlin-powered North American Mustang made its first flight at Hucknall. The aircraft was converted by Rolls-Royce. The Mustang went on to be the finest all-round fighter of WW2, and it all started at Hucknall. I wrote the story of how it all came about, published by the Rolls-Royce Heritage Trust. It has sold 3600 copies and is being re-printed again soon. Sadly, the historic hangar that it and other historic aircraft were converted in, is going to be demolished in the near future.

Strangely enough there is a Perth identity (read multi millionaire) that has one of these that has been fully restored and is in regular use, the guy employs his own pilot as he no longer is fit enough to fly it himself, it is often seen around the Perth skies in summer and is very loud when flown at low altitude.
