What would you take in an emergency?

In view of the terrible floods in the Cannes area of France the other week, and hearing of Lizzies awful tales of desperation and personal loss, I wondered what I'd quickly grab to save if an impending flood or earthquake was threatening my property, and I only had a matter of minutes to retrieve something.

My books on The Great Central Railway and its life up to closure. No, too many and too heavy.

All my Rory Gallagher and Allman Brothers CD's. No, again too cumbersome. Nor my Rory T shirts, they're in the loft along with all my model railway equipment.

I would save a wooden ornament of a cat that has been hollowed out and contains the ashes of my last cat Gazza, and is probably the only remaining item of my distant past.

Or my favourite picture of my two daughters when they were beautiful toddlers.

Sod everything else, these two items are irreplaceable.

If that moment ever happened. I think I would be stuck to the spot in terror. A thousand things flashing through my mind. Couldn't take any important papers, I assume I wouldn't have time to open the safe! So when my brain activated again.

I would grab the old mans hand and scarper.

Impending?? We are ALWAYS at Mother Nature's mercy, earthquakes happen, they cannot be predicted, weather forecasting is much like me reading your palm.

Preparedness is the key.

No, I'm like everyone else, very poorly prepared, but floods don't affect me, severe thunderstorms, tornadoes and earthquakes do, but how does one prepare for those?

We had a tornado a couple of hundred yards to the north of us one year, scary hearing it and not being able to see it, ice storm a few years back that left us without power for nearly a week.

I remember the Loma Prieta earthquake of 89, rattled the house in Sacramento, impossible to predict or be prepared for.

Many years ago our area was strife with wildfires. Our house is surrounded by pine trees. We were told that if a fire came near we'd have 20 minutes to take what you could, and get out. So we made a list of what to grab, and where it was in the house, so we didn't stand there wasting time. It was mainly important papers, photos and a few treasures. The rest can be replaced.

DJBs idea of the bug out bag is a good one. I also have a small external hard drive with all my photos, personal docs on it. It fits into my shirt pocket. There wouldn't be much time for figuring which photo albums etc. to take. Wife and dog go without saying of course! Somebody's got to make the tea. LOL. Oh boy! I'd have to take the teapot, kettle and all fixins. Then let's see..... Dog food, people food, a change of clothes. I'm just not prepared, am I? :-)

No Loppy, you're not. By the time you'd got packed, you would be washed a mile down the road.

The things that I'd take in an emergency are: My wife, youngest daughter and dog and the Double Yellow Headed Amazon parrot on my shoulder. On second thoughts, it'd be on my wife's shoulder as it would probably bite my ears off, haha. In my pocket I'd have my Transend 1TB Portable Hard Drive. It has all my family films, photos, music and everything else from my computer.

These are all irreplaceable, everything else can be replaced. :)

The little piece of plastic that lets me get cash out of the bank(hoping cash machines are still working)

or My collection of Nottingham directories (problem heavier than FLY 2s GCR books)

So I would take just one directory ,my earliest & of the most value 1832 Whites

And I suppose I would take my wife too ;)

And my wife would take the cat.

In an emergency just in case the responsibility for the procreation of mankind should fall on my shoulders I would take a bagful of blue pills and a bike.

Viagra Dave ? on a promise...................................or several?

Too late Michael, snipped years ago. Anyway if it's the end of civilisation as we know it, then I'm not really interested in the furtherance of mankind.
