Sherwood Station was part of the long defunct 'Nottingham Suburban Railway'.

Located at the present day junction of Mapperley Rise, Sherwood Vale and Cresta Gardens.

Ran at a low level, as your elevated picture would seem to confirm....just north of the station 'Ashwells's Tunnel' took the line beneath Woodthorpe Grange Park, southern tunnel portal seems to be just visible in your picture.

Hiya,

Are there any other railway tunnels under nottingham that are doable? i mean, not used anymore and are easily accessible to go and nosey round? Mates have looked at some near the broadmarsh so now im on a mission to find loads more to go looking at and taking pics of.

Other tunnels.

Carlton Rd next to what used to be Manvers School and across the road running under Thorneywood.

Arnold off Arno Vale. You can walk from Arnold park to Arno Vale along the cutting where the track used to run.

There used to be one on the corner next to Clarendon College but don't know if that's still accessible.

That was the site of the former Carrington Station, first station north of the Vic'

IIRC, the descent down to the old platforms is now gated off. The station had tunnel portals either end of the platform; Mansfield Road tunnel to the south and Sherwood Rise tunnel to the north....both quite lengthy.

Wonder if the northern exit from Sherwood Rise tunnel is still visible, perhaps from Camelot Avenue, off Haydn Road - near to the location of the former New Basford station?

Fewer operating rail tunnels in Notts than just about any other English county!

The only passenger tunnels are Annesley/Kirkby Tunnel, which was reopened (after 30 years of closure) to accomodate the revamped 'Robin Hood Line' and Askham Tunnel, south of Retford on the East Coast Main Line - which, at 67 yards, is one of the shortest tunnels on the whole national system.

Don't be tempted to walk into Askham Tunnel Sal, as trains go through at 115mph+!

Old thread, but Mapperley Tunnel is still open at one end. Near the gedling pit.

180px-Mapperley_Tunnel_Eastern_Portal.jpg

It's on the old Great Northern Back line , goes( or used to go) past gedling pit, then through the tunnel, then through to arnold hill pk as mentioned above, over mansfield rd to Daybrook Station then onwards to Derby via the Bennerley Viaduct that still stands unused.

I remember going to Sherwood Station as a little 'un to go on us 'olidays (most likely, Skeggy). I seem to remember the station being on, or close to, Mansfield Road - but I could be wrong. The railway bridge over Mansfield Road remained for many years.

that would be "Daybrook".....the line had to cross mansfield road........sherwood station is on woodthorpe park.......we had a mint den in the station then one one day we turned up only to find it had been flattened....saying that we still had fun playing on the flats as they were being built....lol

Got it - you are correct, it would have been "Daybrook" station! Was it on the same line as Sherwood?

Yes, Sherwood was the next station to the south on the Nottingham Suburban Railway

Can't find one, following an initial search...should feature on any pre-1960's Ordnance Survey map.

Will have another dig...

The Suburban Railway was only around 4 miles long and ran from Trent Lane Jct at Sneinton to just beyond Daybrook station, via Thorneywood and Sherwood. The sudden closure took place in the late 50's due to the rapid deterioration of Thorneywood Tunnel...the southern portal of which used to be visible at the Carlton Road/Porchester Road traffic lights.

Ta for that (I can picture it now.) IMMSC the right hand tunnel (If travelling towards Carlton from the city up Carlton road) is /was used as an indoor rifle range.

Not sure if this will link to the actual map, you may have to scroll around to find what you want, but the map does show the lines - with both the Sherwood and Daybrook stations:

Daybrook St was a Great Northern Station. Not really part of NSR. But the NSR branched off the GN just east of daybrook st.

Behind B&Q now (in the carpk)you can still see the rail embankment of the GN line heading east and the NSR embankment spurring off to the right.

Next the NSR went over Thackery's Lane on a bridge that was demolished about 25 years ago:

NCCC000746.jpg

Then through woodthorpe onto the park going under woodthorpe drive. this road bridge is still there and they have put a dummy train coming out of the tunnel and an info board about the NSR on the parkside of the tunnel. The line went right across woodthorpe pk through Ashwells tunnel. Now filled in. Here it is when it wasn't:

Next was Sherwood station. pictured at the start of this thread. There was also a branch line off here to the Mapperley brickworks which goes off under a small bridge under Sherwood Vale. You can still see it if you venture through the trees. Here's a fairly recent pic:

notsub4.jpg

The main NSR also goes under Sherwood Vale. that bridge is also still intact, but you can't really get under it as there's a new building in the way. after that the line went into an a slightyly s shaped tunnel that took the line right under Woodborough road coming out just west of the wells road.

Then passing under astley road and dooland drive St Anns station was ater that. the station house is still on the corner of Dooland and wells rd. There are now flats on the station site, nr the gardners pub.

Just where the gardners is there was a lovely bridge across the Wells road. Then it went into a cutting that still exists, just a short way up Mickleborough ave on the right. Then into another tunnel that took it right through to Thorney wood station behind the Coopers pub on Porchester rd.NTGM008360.jpg

Then under Carlton Road and into yet another tunnel. Mentioned above, was later turned into a rifle range. Then then onto Sneinto Dale which it crossed another bridge then parallel with Highcliffe rd till it went under Sneinton Boulevard. there's still signs of a rail bridge here. South of the boulevard there's a footpath of the rail route here. but then it crossed Colwick road on a bridge that's was demolished ( I think in the 60's)

NTGM008159.jpg

the line then curved West for it to re join the Great Northern line at Trent lane junction There s also another bridge here over Trent Lane which of course is still there. The only surviving NSr bridge :-(

It was between this bridge and the colwick rd bridge that the line was bombed during an air raid in the 40's It was never repaired they just put buffers on it.

That's about all I know. Oh there was another small branch at Thorneywood for another brickworks on the other side of porchester rd.

Phew long post!
