Re this book, was there any mention of the "gantry walkway" between the 2 emnankments (GNR/NSR) at the signal box just before Woodthorpe Drive ,better still photos? I have a photocopy of a photocopy etc article from Britsh Railways Journal no 14 1986 which has blurred photos the likes of such I've not seen anywhere else, the bowstring bridges at Trent Lane, Sneinton Dale viaduct, Wells Rd bridge, Thackerys Lane bridge , a J2 with goods train back of the council houses on Coppice Rd in 1950 and a J52 shunting wagons in the 7 line wide (at that point) Thorneywood Station Yard

there you go again ,getting technical on me! lol, do you mean big as in pixies or whatever? book is A5 size, I just put in my scanner, copied it sent to photobucket and copy paste etc

Ooops, also just noticed I put COPPICE RD re the J2 photo, meant of course WELLS RD.

Yes, it was big in pixels! But since it is a linked image here, it really doesn't matter. If you want to shrink your pics before you upload them to Photobucket, there are a number of free resizing programs - I use one called "Easy Thumbnails" that allows you to reduce an image to almost any size you want!

You can download the program HERE

Re the earlier mentioned book heres a scan of a pic in such, as I said a copy of a copy of a copy etc, This is the bridge over Wells Road looking towards Mapperley Top, St Ann's Station was up the lane on the left, where that advertising sign was is about the site of The Gardeners pub (if still there)

ps, tried that downsizing programme, got on it but nothing happened

Above the picture are plans of the layouts of the stations

Prompted by comment to me re congestion from Stu and my trip on Manchester to Bury Tram, how about opening the former GNR from Nottinghm (they could use that bay platform) for trams to Netherfield etc then Mapperley tunnel (am certain these days they could make that safe and solid) to Arno Vale Rd then one way or the other into Arnold?

Why not go the whole hog and re-open the Vic tunnels as well to form an underground system, thats what they should have done in the first place, it could have been a partial tram/subway system, a bit like the enigmatic Kingsway Tunnel, it's entrance untouched, conduit track still in place, in the middle of the road at Holborn in Central London.

It's an intriguing idea. I'm not sure how they would take it into the centre of Arnold from Arno Vale Road but it could be argued that this isn't necessary anyway. The Arnold shopping centre seems to be deteriorating in business to me (and that gives me no pleasure to say so). One of the things that has contributed to this is the fairly new parking charges operating in the town. The Sainsbury supermarket at Daybrook undoubtedly took a lot of business away from Arnold's town centre too. If history were to repeat itself there might be a possibility or two in taking a line to the Daybrook area close to Woodthorpe.

Another possibility might be in just terminating it around Mapperley Plains somewhere and running a shuttle service to it. Over the hill towards Gedling there are other opportunities for extending such an idea using the proposed plans they had for a loop road extension perhaps.

Like Stu says Arnold is slowly being destroyed...The clever sod councillors are doing this up and down the country.Give planning to the big boys and they may as well demolish the high streets and markets...Beeston is as bad all charity shops and loads closed down.

As for Radford rd, I don't know why they don't wipe out the whole area like they did with St Anns...well over half the shops are boarded up.

Politicians have a lot to answer for with their crap decisions...I still haven't forgotten Drury Hill.....peasants.dry.gif

Yes indeed pb. Just to digress for a moment and it's probably for another thread, but it is an absolute crime the way that Arnold has been allowed to deteriorate. Going by my own experience and I know many who say similar, a few years ago I would use the town centre regularly. Perhaps one day a week to grocery shop, do my banking and visit the market (especially for the excellent fresh fish available there). I'd also regularly enjoy a pint or two in Arnold in such places as the Friar Tuck, The Robin Hood etc. Nowadays I never go there from one month to the next. It's all such a great shame and of course it's not only Arnold...

Stu, i heard that the Robin Hood in Arnold was now closed. As you mentioned earlier about the parking charges, shops in Mapperley and Carlton are suffering. Arnold used to be a nice shopping area before they "improved" it.

Is the large covered car park above ASDA now also subject to charge?

Always regard that feature as an 'attraction' when making rare visits.

Would be loathe to go again, if so...

Cheers

That must be very recent Den as it was 'soldiering on' the last time I went past there - albeit with hardly a soul in there. Gedling Borough Council have really made a mistake charging for parking in all these areas. I think for a lot of people it was the final straw. For my own part I can drive down from Redhill and visit Sainsbury's and park for nothing or alternatively wind my way into Arnold, try and find a spot to park then pay for the privilege. It's not much of a decision to make really and that's what most people will be thinking too.

Re the pubs. The Lord Nelson has been shut for some months too and of course The Druids Tavern (first opened 1829) is now recently demolished. Others will be sure to follow, sadly. At Daybrook, The White Hart - once the biggest taker of M & B Ales (yes I know!) in the Midlands is now a boarded-up mess.

Our council is on about charging on our carparks ( what few of them there are ) that leaves only sainsbury's so they are on about charging and getting it back in store....but apparently theres some stink with the residents as the sainsbury store was only granted permission if they would NOT charge for parking as that site has some order on it that says they cant.

  • 1 month later...

In the 80’s as kids we used to go through the tunnel leading from Carrington station to Victoria station and you could get out into the vc bit (where the multi stoery car park is) and climb up the side of the sandstone cliffs to the top.

The carrington station bit was weird and scary, like a secret valley overgrown with trees (and i’m sure caves?) and full of needles and old porno mags and glue bags etc.

Anyway, half way between Carrington station and Victoria station there was a tunnel leading off to the Mansfield road graveyard. The other end of that tunnel is in the amphitheatre bit of the graveyard and you can get in but it’s blocked off at the end leading back to the main tunnel.

We were told that the blocked off northern tunnel exit of the Carrington station valley was filled with old army gear and machinery and at that time it was quite securely blocked with metal bars and the like.

After they built over the Carrington station bit with offices my brother went down the said manhole in the car park. He found a ladder that led to the tunnels and he back through the main tunnel to VC (on his todd!) but it was locked when he got there.

I am going back there today to see what i can see ! if i don’t return tell my family I loved them !

Never found this tunnel to the graveyard you mention? nor heard any other reference to it? there were various rooms off the tunnel inc one with loads of batteries in it and another like a "rest room" there was a rumour the "gated entrance" on the left of mansfield rd just before St Andrews Church led to the tunnel but far as I know just to cave air raid shelter? The North end of Sherwood Tunnel was used by an electrical company in 1970,s (did motor rewinds etc at place back of Noel Street Baths but forget their name) as storage with access from Haydn Road.

I'll ask my mate this one, Ashley. He was brought up in the house on Mansfield Road with that gated entrance in the front garden. It's been talked of here before that the cave beneath there was indeed used as an air raid shelter. I believe there are still ladies and gents toilets etc underneath there.

There are a couple of pics of the rathole in a book somewhere, damned if I can remeber which though, probably one of the Malcolm Castledine ones. There's also a shot taken from Arnold Road bridge of a flying pig coming out of the rathole on one of the Nottingham area DVDs (Eric Swale or John Proctor)
