LizzieM 9,279
Like that! The trains are so slow over there in US and Canada though aren't they? Nothing worse than sitting at a 'railroad crossing' while a mile long train chundles through. My husband was in Seattle a few years ago working and decided to take the train to LA rather than fly. It took him days, LOL
Ayupmeducks 1,728
Passenger services take second place to freight, that's why train service is so slow. A mile long??? That was a short train, should see the coal trains going through Thayer, almost two miles long... The main line out of California going up through the Sierra's and parallel to Interstate 80, you often travel at side of very long trains with two to three locos at the front, one in the middle and two "helpers" at the rear end. They seem to travel at or higher speeds than the freeway traffic. Down here it's mostly coal trains from Arkansas traveling north to the power stations along the Mississippi river. katyjay 5,000
Our youngest was working in N. California last summer, he had got a ride up there but needed to get the train back to Flagstaff. Had to get himself first to one train that took him to Bakersfield, then a bus link to L.A then the train to Flagstaff, took him 22 hrs!
BeestonMick 263
The bloody Coca-Cola lorry caused chaos in Cardiff yesterday - what the hell has this to do with Christmas apart from advertising their product?
Ayupmeducks 1,728
Public transport sucks Kath, there's rail tracks through Thayer, but all it carries is freight, no passenger services, but then we only have Amtrack, and none of the major rail companies run passenger trains anymore. The only public transport around these parts is one Greyhound bus a day in and out of Thayer. Closest airport is West Plains, over an hours drive away. No car, long walks!! Very long walks. RGR 218
We have rode "Amtrak" and "Via Canada" quite a few times.Last year we took the "California Zephyr" from Chicago to Sacramento to see the Kids. The Zephyr to me was like a Cruise Ship on rails and the upper Level Sightseer Lounge cars with wraparound Vista windows is the place to be when crossing the Sierra Nevada Mountains ,the Deserts ,my not be a high speed train but you're on a sightseeing Vacation.
