MargieH 7,594
@Annesley Redi’ve never had shingles myself but a couple of my friends have and they both said how painful it was. Hope you get better soon ….
Annesley Red 80
Thanks Jill and Margie. The pain went for 90 minutes when the Reds won and secured Prem football but I've still got a feeling sunburn after over a week of it. You can't take anything for it but I id try beer at the weekend , that helped lol
DJ360 6,712
I've just done it AGAIN!!!.. Slight knock to my shin and blood everywhere!! I've noticed generally that my skin is thinner and bruises easier, but this is ridiculous. I picked up several little knocks while re-laying the patio, which bled profusely and took ages to heal. Then last week I lightly bumped into a bit of smooth edged plastic garden furniture and even through trousers and a sock, I took off about a square cm of skin and bled like Niagara. I decided to put on a dry, but waterproof and 'ventilated' plaster and leave it for a whole week. That seems to have worked pretty well though healing isn't complete yet. And just now, a delivery of a large parcel in a cardboard box.. Slightly knocked the parcel onto my shin. Barely felt it..through cotton stretchy trousers, but then.. back at the PC, I noticed blood running off my bare foot onto the carpet. Another plaster and another 7 days.. Is it just me? loppylugs 8,424
Blood thinners can cause such problems. I think I'd check with my doc.
DJ360 6,712
I actually have an actual appointment with an actual Doc on 25th. ( He bragged !!!) I'll mention it then. I take Aspirin 75 EC, beta blockers, ARBs etc.. etc.., but have done for decades.. so this is fairly new. Maybe just age...
loppylugs 8,424
Mrs. L has similar problems, Col. Least little tap on a cupboard door or anything is messy or at least leaves a nasty bruise. I think age is a factor, she's a bit older than me and is on thinners. I am not, my stroke was probably a result of high BP.
Brew 5,378
Lucky old you! this week we have a notification from our doctors there will be no routine appointments until further notice, it's emergency only. they recommend consulting with a pharmacy as a first resort! It seems the amalgamation of the Amber Valley doctors to a limited company has screwed up the IT system.

Hi, Ian and Mary. I was just having a quick read of NS last night before bed when I came across your posts on Sciatica. I think I am struggling with that right now. Got out of bed one morning about three weeks ago and almost fell with a searing pain in my right leg. Right hip down to behind right knee. I almost yelped. Reminded me of that old fifties radio comedy show where this old lady used to say, "It was agony, Ivy." I staggered from the bedroom to my recliner. Eventually got a cup of tea and a couple of Tylenol. Dragged on all day and equal agony trying to lift my right leg into bed that night. Similar pattern each day. Finally got to see my doc. I'd done my research on Web md etc. Told him I thought it might be Osteo Arthritis or Sciatica. I don't think he knows, just told me I could safely take up to eight Tylenol per day. No thanks, Tylenol is lethal for dogs, what about us? Funny co_incidence we three came down withis about same time, me in the US, Ian in Canada, Mary in the UK. It's eased of a bit today, managed to drive to church and stagger in for a bit of sympathy. Trying to exercise a bit, (docs suggestion). Don't want to sit in my recliner all day. Seems like only time will change things. Any other thoughts on this issue would be welcome. Note to CT. If you want to move this to Ailments, aches and pains. Ok with me. Just put it here because thats where I first saw it.

DJ360 6,712
Hoping everyone in pain gets sorted soon... Loppy, I think that 'Tylenol' is 'Mericun speak' for 'Paracetamol'. It does help with mild to moderate pain but you need to take the 'max' amount day in and day out. I must admit my liver gets 'insulted' quite enough without that, so reassurances from Docs and Pharmacists don't quite convince me... A non drinker like yourself might get better relief from Codeine Sulphate (preferably not mixed with Paracetamol like they insist here.) Thing is, Codeine works by converting to Morphine in the Liver and the way that works seems to vary between individuals... but maybe 15 or 30 mg Codeine might help? Last year after my knee replacement, I found that even liquid Morphine didn't do much for the pain and made me sick, Co-Codamol (Codeine plus Paracetamol) sent my ticker into an attack of the vapours, Codeine alone was unpredictable and Paracetamol was about as effective as a fart in a hurricane.. so I just 'toughed it out' and cried a lot... I got there in the end. I'm going in for a repeat performance on the other knee next Monday 16th..

LizzieM 9,497
A good friend of mine, a Consultant Anaethetist, recommends I x 400mg Ibuprofen and 2 Paracetomol 4 times a day for pain control. However when I recently fell and fractured a couple of ribs …… did I mention that to get a bit of sympathy at the time? Anyway, my GP told me to take 2 Co-codamol plus 1 Ibuprofen 4 times a day. I must say they worked a treat on me and my ribs are now mended.
Jill Sparrow 10,267
When I was around four years old, my mother trod on a bar of soap whilst getting out of the bath. She slipped and fell heavily over the side of what was then a cast iron, roll top bath tub, the type so beloved of folks today. She was only in her mid 30s but fractured several ribs. In those days, the treatment was to wrap the upper torso in heavy duty sticking plaster. She seemed to cope fairly well until it was time to remove it some weeks later. She said the pain of removing the sticking plaster was worse than the pain of broken ribs. It was put on at the old Nottingham General Hospital but my father got the job of removing it. In the end he just tore the whole thing off in one fell swoop. They don't use sticking plaster nowadays.
The Pianoman 1,531
On 1/18/2023 at 5:49 PM, Jill Sparrow said: I am hypothyroid and don't want to dishearten you but no one at my surgery seems to know anything about thyroids, how they work or don't work. Even the GP s. Tell them you've researched it on the internet and they become extremely resentful and often slightly aggressive. I just go my own sweet way now and have a blood test once a year but I don't take any notice of what the medics say. I am also hypothyroid and must agree with what you say. I am (or should be) on statins, but as a result of doing my own research I find that you should not take statins with an underactive thyroid. I have found this information on the NHS website no less! I guess the GP's don't read it! I have to book for a blood test in the next few weeks and as well as thyroid function they will check for cholesterol as well. This will of course reveal that I have not been taking the statins. Not sure which way to go with it at the moment.
Jill Sparrow 10,267
It's a minefield, Malcolm. If you are euthyroid (ie your thyroid is in balance) then you shouldn't have a cholesterol problem but if not then you probably will. We shouldn't need to explain this to the GP but it's more often than not the case. Thyroid patients can experience TSH levels that can skyrocket for no apparent reason, leading to drastic amendments in dosage, leading to nasty knock on effects on how we feel. It's an area which is little understood, especially by GPs.
loppylugs 8,424
Hope your surgery goes well Col, and clears up quickly. I think Tylenol may be another name for Paracetomol. The underlying name for it seems to be Acetominifen, and that is marketed under several names in USA and Canada. One could try Ibuprofen a Nottingham product if I remember rightly but it is a Nsaid. I understand these can cause some issues so I have not tried any. Aleve is another. Hurting more today after very active day yesterday. Serves me right I guess. I try to avoid most drugs and just tough it out.

DJ360 6,712
Good luck to you too Ben. Here's hoping we can all get sorted and be pain free.. I just had to cancel my Flu jab for tomorrow as the hospital said it was too close to my planned surgery. Rebooked for the 27th, which should be long enough after.. 11 days. Not sure what will happen about pain relief as I don't get on with Codeine or Morphine and I'm not allowed Ibuprofen.. That said, they gave me lots of Oxycodone in hospital and that didn't seem to cause any problems, (apart from the odd hallucination from the long acting version.... they soon switched me to the 'normal' version.) Maybe they'll let me bring a stash of that home....
LizzieM 9,497
Hope all goes well at your appointment tomorrow Ben. My husband has had great care from the NHS in the past couple of months, following his mini stroke at the end of July. A CT scan, admission to the QMC Stroke Ward within an hour of a follow-up MRI Brain Scan, several telephone consultations, a visit yesterday by a Community Nurse, and another CT scan at QMC this afternoon. As I sat in the waiting area at the QMC Treatment Centre today there were two ‘emergencies’ with Ambulance staff arriving and trundling patients off on trollies, causing delays in the scan department. I was wondering why hubby was behind those closed doors for such a long time! It will be a few days before he hears anything from the hospital but hopefully that episode is now well and truly behind him, just keep taking the 7 tablets a day, plus pain relief for his SCIATICA, that he’s had for literally YEARS! Good luck everyone suffering with it, hope you get relief soon.
