I have just been diagnosed with a slightly (?) overactive thyroid, Thought I was just having panic/anxiety attacks with racing heart etc.

SG i was diagnosed in exactly the same way as yourself having the same symptons, also googled it.........i followed advice on what/what not to eat took the tablets which have decreased in strength over time.  Diagnosed in February at my last appointment 2weeks  ago was told my thyroid had returned to normal and to return in 6 monthes for tests to check my levels. I hope you soon start to feel better and more like your normal self.

Being the newbie I am to N.S. I couldn't work out how to reach out to Physical Perfection to tell him to get on with life as you never know what tomorrow will bring. Obviously at the moment time

I'm a happy Bunny tonight Went for my oncology visit after I had the P.E.T. scan and T.A.C. a couple of weeks ago and all is clear after the scare I had. The next process is due in 6 months after I ha

Well I hadn't intended contributing to this thread but do you want to know how many staples I've got in my tummy?!!  Actually I'll spare you the details but I want to put on record that my experience

Thanks that is very encouraging. I get the results of my second blood test on Wednesday and will know about any medication then. I hope my outcome is as good as yours, just want to be me again.

Just been to doctors to get the second blood test results expecting to have some medication sorted for my thyroid. He is referring me to the Thyroid Clinic at QMC I presume. The last thing I want is a hospital appointment as for over the last year I was at numerous hospital departments/chemo suite with my late husband, it felt like we went to every clinic there was and were more there than at home. I was hoping I would be able to start some sort of medication to make me feel at least a bit more like myself. Have to go back to see doctor in a month, don’t know how long hospital appointment will take to come through. I suppose this clinic will be the best place to get checked, but wish he had referred me after the first blood test, I had to wait 6 weeks between the blood tests. Feel a bit depressed, think it will be a chocolate day!

In a way, SG, you are lucky because you are being referred to an endocrinologist (known to thyroid sufferers as endos) and they know far more about thyroid problems than GPs. Your GP is wise enough to realise this. One of mine wasn't and berated me for researching thyroid problems on the internet. Wiped the smile off his face when the endo I insisted on being referred to eventually came down on my side. I reminded said GP that he was a man with 'general' in his job description.

They will sort you out but it may take a while to get the system balanced.

  • 2 weeks later...

Continuing with the diet and it was going well...

13St 12 1/4lb this morning.

But this is weird....

As part of the plan I've been doing weights. All the usual upper body free weights, 3x10 reps.. plus ten crunches. Done proper... as in breathe out.. hands to side of head..etc. The weights are relatively low at 7.5Kg per side.

Then on Monday I was suddenly battered with severe stomach pain, going through to the back. Also what felt like oesophageal pain, plus assorted joint pains and muscle pains, plus tingling in hands and feet , plus lots of odd itches etc. I started taking Esomeprozole..( A PP Inhibitor of the Omeprozole type) which I've only recently weaned off.. thinking I'd either eaten something which upset my gullet/stomach, or possible even caused some sort of 'mechanical' damage doing crunches.
By yesterday it got bad enough to have me asking for an emergency Doc's appt., and bad enough for my reported symptoms to have her agreeing to see me. There followed a very thorough exam which resulted in her deciding nothing 'sinister' was evident, ordering bloods and asking me to come back if things didn't resolve.
I got the bloods done this morning. Was at my daughter's helping her to build some flat pack stuff a couple of hours later when Doc texted to say bloods all normal. Yet I was feeling worse. All sorts of muscle/joint pain. Some in chest/ribs, some in back/shoulders/neck/abdo/forearms/hands/fingers. Worse tingling and itching. leg pain, odd 'shooting' pains all over. Yet I don't feel 'ill'. No fever etc. I don't get this at all. This has never happened previously when I've done weights or any other exercise or diet.

It's got me foxed.

Your doctor said to go back and see her if things didn't resolve, so there you go!   Better to do it today, rather than over the weekend, I think.  Hope you'll get an answer x

Thanks Margie.  Feel a bit better this morning.  Still got some aches but none of the other symptoms so far.  That said they got worse as the day progressed yesterday so we'll see.

Col, skip the weights matey. You're never going to be Arnie. Just gentle exercises will suffice. I've had back pain on and off for two years, and brisk walking eases it, but makes my legs ache. You can't win. Just put it down to wear and tear.

I'm with you on that Fly.  More aching hips legs etc. these days, but I  just put up with it.

It sort of goes along with the 'schooldays are the happiest days of your life' stuff.  We are now living in the 'golden years'  Maybe the writer was referring to the  amount of money you can spend on prescriptions, pain killers and doctor visits.  :sickly:

I was like a teenager till I was 70, then life was all downhill ! However, you can't beat a bit of exercise.

When I'd started work in my teens, an old boy once said to me 'Don't worry son, life gets easier as you get older '.

Silly old sod ! He didn't have to live through the 60's and 70's in his youth. Still, wouldn't have missed it for the world.

Funny how you mentioned things  coming on quick since the magic 70.  I've had a similar experience.  since 70 it has become more and more everything hurts and what don't hurt don't work.  I still do plenty of yard work, but I haven't walked the dogs so much.  It was too hot a week or two ago, now its suddenly turned too cold  i take them in the yard and play ball with them for their sakes, but I am not walking as much.

I'm not keen on doctor visits because my symptoms are vague and I would only end up with a battery of invasive tests which would probably prove nothing except I'm getting older.  I suspect arthritis more than anything.

BTW.  Not trying to suggest one should not get checked in a situation like Col mentioned.  Just speaking very broadly.  Even poor old Jake limps a bit when he gets up from the couch.  He's 8 now going on 60 in dog years.  He'll soon catch me up.

No matter how badly off you are there is always someone worse. I very much admire your fortitude and good humour Ben!

Nice to know that criminals in prison can get a sex change operations on the NHS, money no object for them,  I have got a double hernia but I can't have a operation because I don't meet the criteria.   i.e. not painful enough and not swollen enough and cost money so said the specialist.

Tell em you're really a female in a male body and the hernia spoils the look of your A line frock! You'll go to the top of the list!

....and you behave yourself, our Ben!

Sod the NHS Braddy. I've got some rusty secateurs in the greenhouse, and a well used Junior hacksaw. They'll do adequately.

I get your point Fly and I have no intention of trying to emulate Arnie.  I'll get past this and have another try.  If it goes bad again I'll give up on the weights.

Col, talking to my godson yesterday (He just graduated his Masters in this stuff). His opinion is that 7.5kg is far too heavy and almost certain to do more damage than good to anyone who has not been doing it regularly. His opinion is that anything heavier than a tin of beans is too much to start with.
