On the tube,,its called 'Betamethasone Valerate' 'Betnovate cream' My husband has had a ‘pinkish’ patch on his cheek bone for several months, it doesn’t itch. Self-diagnosis decided it is sun-damage so he’s just been putting moisturiser on the area for weeks, no improvement. Then when we were in Spain last week a friend suggested buying some Betnovate cream, over the counter as it needs a prescription (therefore Drs appt) in England. He’s been applying it for a few days and it’s had no effect. I spoke to our local pharmacist the other day and he said that Betnovate is a steroid and should not be applied on the face but anywhere below the neck is ok.
DJ360 6,712
The only part of me that doesn't itch is my face and.... Everywhere else just touching the skin can set it off. Just went in shower to wash off the prescribed c**p that I'd given another chance earlier. In places, just the water hitting the skin was enough to sting, or itch. The other night I went to bed and tried to relax. Something like a wasp sting started on the front of my right shoulder. Quick scratch.. went away then came back again.. and again.. for hours. This keeps happening all over and little 'hive' type lumps that aren't red, just appearing anywhere and everywhere, then disappearing. Driving me mad.

I had exactly the same thing a few years back, Lizzie. It didn't go and I went to the doc to get it checked out. Referred to a specialist it was diagnosed as sun damage. The specialist said he would have lasered the area if it wasn't so close to my eye. He prescribed Efudix cream which burned the area off in a couple of weeks. Been fine ever since.
MargieH 7,594
@LizzieM you are right in that a steroid ointment shouldn't be used on the face as a general rule, but I've had 2 separate doctors who have said that a tiny amount CAN be used - it should always be used sparingly anyway. One GP said I could even put a teeny weeny smear on some dry itchy skin just below ny eyebrow occasionally , and a hospital doctor at the skin clinic says I can use a very small amount as necessary on an itchy place on my forehead. I suppose the advice is given because some people might 'lather it on' too often?

I had a small itchy patch below my right eye, level with my nostril but well away. Doc tried several things and then said 'Aahh!!' and prescribed Bactroban Cream. This contains an antibiotic called Mupiricin. Did the trick in a couple of days. Not sure what the 'Aahh!' was about though...

My husband about 15 yrs ago had the effect of hives on his back. Couldn't find out why or how they came up. He tried everything with no luck. One day whilst out with us they suddenly appeared again. In the middle of a town my sister in law lifted his shirt up and applied some Calendula. She always has some sort of relief in her handbag. We could almost see them disappearing. They came up for a while after another day but calendula was always used and it eventually stopped. We always have a tube along with Aloe Vera cream or gel. They are natural products. It may be worth trying something that isn't prescribed DJ. Maybe too much medication doesn't help 1
nonnaB 4,893
Been in bed most of the day. I changed my patch of 10 mcg/hr to 5 mcg/hr. I feel rested and I have very little pain. Hope it continues. May the 10 was too much and I overdosed. 1

DJ360 6,712
Just an update on my 'itch'. Still itchy but much less intense than it was and for the first time in weeks I didn't actually wake up itching. Last night I had a 15 minute soak in a 'colloidal Oatmeal bath' and it worked wonders. Definitely not a cure, but a huge help in calming my skin. There's quite a lot about it online and people like Aveeno charge loads for it and do various lotions with oatmeal. I just wanted to try the oatmeal alone. Aveeno charge about £12 for 8 small sachets and I couldn't find a local supplier anyway. So I made my own. Basically it's just oat flour and 'colloidal' just means a suspension of very fine particles which don't just settle out. I put a cupful of ordinary rolled oats (85p a for 500 grams from co-op) into the blender and whizzed them. Took about ten minutes of blending to get them really fine, but it worked. Just mixed them up in a bathful of lukewarm water and had a soak. Magic!! There were still a few larger bits some of which stuck to me so I had to have a very brief shower off, which probably isn't the idea. One website recommends putting them in a muslin bag if you can't get them completely down to flour size and Mrs Col says she has some muslin somewhere. But, I've made a load more today and seived it before putting in an airtight container, so I'll try that tonight. Progress.
philmayfield 6,089
I had an eczema rash on my right ankle for about 4 weeks and it was driving me mad especially at night. I tried E45 cream to no avail. I was recommended Eumovate cream which I got from the pharmacist at Boots. It appeared to work right from the first application on Tuesday; the rash is disappearing and there's no itchiness. It is available on prescription but you can buy it over the counter if you can prove you're of sound mind!

nonnaB 4,893
Went to see the neurosurgeon yesterday and it wasn't really good news. He said there were too many things wrong with my spine that it was difficult to concentrate on treating one. In short my back is a disaster. An operation wouldn't do any good for the whole of my spine but all is not lost as he suggested to treat the vertebrae that are touching and causing the pain. Its up to me whether I want to do this operation or not. Anyway I have been put on his waiting list and maybe in 2/3 months I will be called. I wasn't very happy in fact I was upset but today we've been discussing it and I think it's the best thing to do.
